Stephen O’Malley plucks out this elemental, spellbinding Raga session performed by dhrupad master Zia Mohiuddin Dagar recorded in Seattle, 1986, for his exquisite Ideologic Organ label. It’s deeply precious music, thousands of years in development, and it’s not hard it hear its influence over O’Malley’s other projects, from the pace and hypnotism of Sunn 0))) to the more sprawling psychedelic coordinates of Æthenor. Just sublime.

Rahim Fahimuddin Dagar was an exponent of Dagar vani Dhrupad of Indian classical music. He represented the 19th generation of Dagar Tradition. Ustad Rahim Fahimuddin Khan Dagar was known not only for the power and spontaneity of his alaap, but also for his rich repertoire of compositions, some of which are believed to date back to the 12th and 13th centuries. It is the quality of music which has taken him to many countries like the United States, France, Germany and Italy for performances before select audiences. His recordings have been released in Switzerland, Germany and Italy.

Raga Miyan Ki Malhar is a 2000 album by Ustad Zahiruddin Dagar and Ustad Faiyazuddin Dagar, who are known as The Dagar Brothers. Taken from a 1989 live recording, this was originally released on cassette before it was reissued on CD in 2003 by Times Music.

Art Of Rudra-Veena is originally a 1984 album by Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar. This remaster from 1996, released by Auvidis Ethnic, combines two ragas as one track.
