Dale Hawkins

Delmar Allen "Dale" Hawkins was a pioneer American rock singer, songwriter, and rhythm guitarist who was often called the architect of swamp rock boogie. Hawkins' pioneering contributions have been recognized by the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. Fellow rockabilly pioneer Ronnie Hawkins was his cousin.

Dale Hawkins, of course, is best known for "Suzie-Q" a Top 30 Billboard hit for him in 1957 that turned into a garage rock standard in the '60s. During that decade, Hawkins was relatively quiet as a record-maker, but he did behind-the-scenes work as a producer before resurfacing in 1969 with LA, Memphis & Tyler, Texas on Bell Records. Named after the three towns it was recorded in, it's a bit easy to overrate LA, Memphis upon its first listen because it comes as a shock that Hawkins was more than a rockabilly cat. He was an early roots rocker, certainly, playing rockabilly but also touching back on its blues and country roots, plus hitting a bunch of stuff in between and don't forget the L.A. in the title, either, since he did give this album several splashes of snazzy showbiz pizzazz reminiscent of Sonny Bono.

Ronald Cornett Hawkins OC[1] (January 10, 1935 – May 29, 2022) was an American rock and roll singer, long based in Canada, whose career spanned 66 years. His career began in Arkansas, United States, where he was born and raised. He found success in Ontario, Canada, and lived there for most of his life. Hawkins was an institution of the Ontario music scene for over 40 years. He was influential in the evolution of rock music in Canada.

This remastered 2-CD edition contains Roy Buchanan's earliest works, taped between 1957 and 1962, including a couple of singles released under his own name, plus a bunch of seminal collaborations as a session man and guitar slinger for such R&B and rock & roll pioneers as Dale Hawkins, Bob Luman, Freddy Cannon, and Danny and The Juniors, among others. These sensational recordings constitute a treasure of incalculable value, which would form the basis of Buchanan's legend and secure his reputation as one of the greatest blues-rock figures ever.

Crystal, Chief, Chance, Tempus, and Oriole as well as the more famous Vee-Jay and Chess. Artists featured include Bo Diddley, Betty Everett, the Spaniels, Chuck Berry, Dale Hawkins and Jimmy McCracklin, but genre aficionados will also savor the less-known names Compiled and annotated by former BBC Radio 1 DJ, record producer and music historian Stuart Colman.
