A unire la parte maschile e quella femminile di questo libro è Stephen King. La parte maschile conosce a fondo la sua opera, e l’ha anche tradotta a lungo. Quella femminile lo legge, e anzi lo rilegge ogni giorno. Questo non è un vero e proprio saggio e tanto meno un’elencazione di titoli e autori. L’idea è capire cosa ne è di quegli archetipi che Stephen King rintracciò in Danse Macabre: Vampiri, Licantropi, Cose Senza Nome, Fantasmi, che nel frattempo hanno assunto nuove forme, e la leggenda dell’Uncino. Storie sussurrate di bocca in bocca, o di tastiera in tastiera, storie antiche quanto la nostra paura, che mutano aspetto e non cambiano mai. L’idea, insomma, è provare a raccontare le nostre debolezze di esseri umani, e il modo in cui gli scrittori di letteratura fantastica le hanno viste e restituite. Capire le nostre paure, anche, che si inanellano indietro nel tempo fino alla paura più antica, che è quella che separa il bene e il male, l’ordine e il caos, l’apollineo e il dionisiaco.

Enchanting tales and timeless legends are the common threads running through this album conceived by Duo Jatekok: Nairi Badal and Adelaide Panaget are transformed into sorceresses on four hands and two pianos - enchanting guides who lead us through a programme featuring a Faustian pact, magic, and the world of childhood. At its heart is Liszt's Piano Sonata, brilliantly transcribed for two keyboards by Saint-Saens: 'It illustrates the eternal struggle between the hubris of excess and the tragic fall, between light and darkness', say the duo of this 'Faustian' masterpiece by Liszt, a great admirer of Goethe. In a more carefree but equally fantastical vein is the famous Sorcerer's Apprentice, which Paul Dukas himself transcribed in 1898.
