Review (AMG)
Even after Dave Matthews scuttled recording sessions with producer Steve Lillywhite in 2000 and turned to Glen Ballard to co-write and produce what became Everyday, he and his band performed songs from the abortive sessions in concert, and they eventually reworked the material into the 2002 album Busted Stuff.

Eleven official live albums in one discography is an awful lot, but Dave Matthews manages to throw a few surprises in on 2010’s Live in New York City. A double-album capturing their second night at their July 2010 stint at Citi Field, this finds DMB downplaying their big hits – the biggest here is the ballad “Crash into Me” – in favor of moody selections from deep in his catalog, including songs from Matthews’ 2003 solo album Some Devil. This lends the performance a meditative quality unusual for such a large setting – even the extended numbers (five songs clock in over ten minutes, two of them over 15) don’t dig deep so much as float, the improvisations relying on texture instead of groove. It’s a subtle difference, one that matters only to the dedicated, but it does mean that Live in New York City winds up with a different flavor than its ten predecessors. (Allmusic)

Formed in the early '90s by South African vocalist/guitarist Dave Matthews, the Dave Matthews Band presented a more pop-oriented version of the Grateful Dead crossed with elements of jazz, funk, and the worldbeat explorations of Paul Simon and Sting. Matthews populated the group with several Virginia-based musicians – bassist Stefan Lessard, saxophonist Leroi Moore, violinist Boyd Tinsley, drummer Carter Beauford, and short-lived keyboardist Peter Griesar – and the band built up a strong word-of-mouth buzz by touring the country constantly, with special attention paid to college campuses. Griesar left the lineup in March 1993, but the Dave Matthews Band moved ahead in his absence, releasing the independent album Remember Two Things later that year and issuing a live EP, Recently, in 1994. After fielding offers from major labels, the band signed with RCA and released the debut effort Under the Table and Dreaming in September 1994.

Away from the World is the eighth studio album by Dave Matthews Band (DMB), slated for release on September 11, 2012. Steve Lillywhite produced Away from the World, which marks his first released studio album with the band since 1998's Before These Crowded Streets. A series of failed sessions with Lillywhite led to the leaked Lillywhite Sessions in 2001 and Lillywhite's departure from the band's work.
