Premiere CD release of stunning David Amram score for 1961 John Frankenheimer social drama starring idealistic Burt Lancaster colliding with violent gang of teenage street toughs. Shelley Winters, Dina Merrill also star. Superb Edward Anhalt script brings still-topical vibe to tense story. David Amram, composer of both orchestral, jazz works for symphony (and accomplished French hornist) creates powerful meld of both idioms, adds harmonica, guitar for moody main theme with Latin color, then balances with knockout action music for full orchestra. Amram goes on to score John Frankenheimer masterpiece The Manchurian Candidate as well as initial but never used score for same director's Seven Days In May. Intrada CD presents entire original LP in vivid stereo from mint condition album masters courtesy Sony Music.

Nestled in the quaint upstate town of Saratoga Springs, New York is Caffè Lena, the oldest continuously operating folk music coffeehouse in the US. Opened by Lena Spencer in 1960, this tiny room has played host to influential artists across diverse genres of music; traditional folk, blues, singer-songwriters, jazz and bluegrass. Luckily, many performances were caught on tape through the years, offering the listener a thrilling seat inside this hallowed venue. 'Live At Caffè Lena', a 3-CD box set, the result of years of investigative research, contains 47 tracks, all released for the very first time, alongside previously unpublished photographs. Images include selections from the archive of esteemed photographer Joe Alper, who captured many iconic, intimate portraits from the folk era of the 1960s.

The French horn has rarely been used in jazz as a solo instrument until recent times. Back in the 1950s, jazz's top French horn player was Julius Watkins, with David Amram certainly ranking in the top five. For this 1957 session, trombonist Curtis Fuller and his quintet with altoist Sahib Shihab, pianist Hampton Hawes (Teddy Charles, who contributed three originals, takes his place on one number), bassist Addison Farmer, and drummer Jerry Segal are joined by both Watkins and Amram. On originals by Charles, Amram, and Salvatore Zito, the colorful ensembles and the very adept soloing by the French horns make this a particularly memorable recording. Strange that this album has been obscure for so long. Only the brief playing time keeps this intriguing set from getting a higher rating.

Lionel Hampton and his French New Sound Vol. 1 (1955). Lionel Hampton joins forces with a number of top French musicians for this 1955 studio session, reissued in Verve's Jazz in Paris series. Three of the four compositions are Hampton's, swinging tunes arranged by Christian Chevalier. The first, "Voice of the North," is primarily for the leader's matchless vibes with the rhythm section, though individual soloists are featured, including fellow Americans Nat Adderley and Benny Bailey on trumpets and David Amram on French horn, as well as clarinetist Maurice Meunier and baritone saxophonist William Boucaya. It's just Hampton and the rhythm section (pianist René Urtreger, bassist Guy Pedersen, and drummer Jean-Baptiste Reilles) for the long workout of "À la French"…

Two former LPs by big bands led by bassist Oscar Pettiford (who doubles on cello) are reissued in full on this single CD. The arrangements by Gigi Gryce, Lucky Thompson, and Benny Golson feature a lot of concise solos, an inventive use of the harp (either by Janet Putnam or Betty Glamann), and colorful ensembles. Among the many soloists are trumpeter Art Farmer, trombonists Jimmy Cleveland and Al Grey, the French horn of Julius Watkins, the tenors of Thompson or Golson, and the bassist-leader. This formerly rare music is highly recommended to straight-ahead jazz fans, for it is full of fresh material and subtle surprises.

A live date recorded at the Bottom Line in New York City, Whatever Happened to Love? features Betty Carter with her trio of the time backed by a 15-piece orchestra (mostly strings) conducted by David Amram. It's an enjoyable set, though not up to the ecstatic heights Ms. Carter often achieved in the '60s and early '70s. The pieces chosen are generally slow and even torchy, with the exception of her classic "With No Words" and, especially when the strings are present, there's a bit too much plushness and too little bite. But when it's only the trio, her unique voice is given a good opportunity to shine, and she digs into the material with obvious relish. Her ability to bend saccharine tunes like Bacharach's "I Cry Alone" or "Cocktails for Two" to her own creative ends is always a joy and on good display here. Overall, not an absolutely essential Carter release, but one that could well turn the heads of listeners either unfamiliar with her or those who have previously shied away.
