Few contemporary artists defy convention like Dawn Richard, who has gone from being a member of Danity Kane—the girl group assembled by Sean Combs on the MTV reality show Making the Band—to a prolific career of music that has been categorized as electronic, ambient, dance, R&B, pop and soul. She is a shapeshifter who can sound like a dance diva when collaborating with DJs Coco & Breezy, a nu-soul wonder with Gianni Lee, or an avant-garde art-popper with Kimbra. But her collaborations with neoclassical composer Spencer Zachn are the most surprising. The duo's third record, Quiet in a World Full of Noise, is a story in blood-and-guts vulnerability and atmospheric beauty. Like its acclaimed predecessor Pigments, the album delves into ambient experimentalism, effortlessly marrying soul, chamber jazz and avant-garde R&B.

Dawn Angeliqué Richard, the daughter of Chocolate Milk percussionist and vocalist Frank Richard, known professionally as Dawn Richard or D∆WN, is an American singer-songwriter, actress and animator. Merge Records release Pigments, the debut collaboration between New Orleans electro-revival dynamo Dawn Richard and multi-instrumentalist, producer, and composer Spencer Zahn. Pigments is a project about the power of self-expression through living art, through motion. It’s also a love letter to New Orleans, Louisiana. Not strictly classical, jazz or ambient electronica but rather a body of “movements,” it is an expressive soundscape that is an immersive passage through the city as seen through the eyes of a young Black girl with dreams to paint her future with the pigments given to her.

Don’t try and box Dawn Richard in: The shape-shifting singer is probably the only name in R&B who’s made futuristic bops with Diddy and has a creative partnership with Adult Swim. In her previous solo work, Richard has imagined dystopian battlegrounds and rendered herself as something of an Afrofuturist Joan of Arc, but new breed opens with something closer to home: “She’s just a girl from the Nine.” That would be the Ninth Ward of New Orleans, where Richard descended from a local tribe identifying as sovereign black Native Americans (the Washitaw Nation), and where Hurricane Katrina once destroyed her family’s home. new breed is a celebration of her city’s cultural legacy, suffused with warmth and underdog resilience: “I know that we ain’t polished, but that don’t mean we ain’t diamonds,” goes the bluesy closing statement “we, diamonds.” But Richard’s experimentalism still shines through: The tough future-funk of “shades” feels like a spiritual follow-up to Diddy-Dirty Money’s Last Train to Paris.

When it first appeared in May 2016, Dawn Richard's Kingdom-produced Infrared EP was rightly praised by critics for its fusion of future R&B songs, bass-heavy rhythms, and intergalactic electronics. Fade To Mind has bowed to pressure and finally released the previously download-only EP on vinyl and CD, accompanying the four original tracks with a swathe of fresh remixes. These are largely more club-ready than the sweet and seductive original versions, whilst retaining much of the original essence of Infrared. Kingdom delivers his own 'Honest VTX' mix of 'Baptize", but it's the revisions from Ikonika, Rizzla, Leonce and Helix that hit home hardest.
