Six superlative works from the internationally acclaimed Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Kieslowski. Includes Kieslowski's narrative debut, The Scar (1976), a dramatic film about an earnest Communist Party member who's thrown into the center of a complicated political battle. Jerzy Stuhr stars in Camera Buff (1979), a biting political satire about a factory worker's fascination with an 8mm movie camera. The man's curious obsession leads to consequences both comedic and tragic. No End (1985) is a sublime blend of thematic elements both political and spiritual. The film tells the story of a young widow who expresses her love for her dead husband by taking up the cause of striking workers. Blind Chance (1987) is a narrative essay on chance and destiny about a middle-aged man who's allowed to sample three distinct outcomes that hinge upon whether he catches or misses a speeding train. A Short Film About Killing (1988) and A Short Film About Love (1988) are masterful feature-length spin-offs of episodes from The Decalogue. The former won the European Film Academy Award for "Best European Film" in 1988.

I suppose many of us would have loved the romanticism associated with ninjas, with their famed skills of invisibility, swordsmanship, cunning and a whole host of weaponry and gadgets that add to their element of surprise. If you'd think you know a lot of their modus operandi, then perhaps The Ninjas, aka Shinobi No Mono, would contribute to that wealth of knowledge, and at the same time dispel some of the myths and stories that add to the stature of these masked assassins.
If you'd wonder what a ninja does when out of his mask, then the film would have painted a rather mundane picture of the practicing ninjas, who hone their skills in enclaves, and frankly look no more like your usual Samurais, except sans status, and honing their skills ala rebels in hiding at their fortified base, and being skilled assassins for hire to Samurais who need someone to do their dirty work for them (yes, even back then you can outsource your dirty laundry), as they themselves are bounded by the honor code of bushido.

The prolific Brillante Mendoza, one of the few internationally acknowledged auteurs in this year's Tribeca, follows up Kinatay, the gang-rape-and-dismemberment outrage from last year's Cannes, with a gentle ode to two resilient Manila family elders linked by a crime. The title is Tagalog for "grandmother": Sepa (Anita Linda) tries to raise money for the funeral of her grandson, killed during a cell-phone theft; the murderer's granny, Puring (Rustica Carpio), dutifully brings mango and rice cakes to the boy in jail while mollifying Sepa's anger with pesos tied up in a dirty hankie. Though arthritic and weary, these two gray panthers offer a sharp, unsentimental portrait of cunning and determination.

Universally acclaimed by critics, the multiple award-winning Summer Hours is the great contemporary French filmmaker Olivier Assayas’s most personal film to date. Three siblings, played by Juliette Binoche, Charles Berling, and Jérémie Rénier, must decide what to do with the country estate and objects they’ve inherited from their mother. From this simple story, Assayas creates an exquisitely nuanced drama about the material of globalized modern living. Naturalistic and unsentimental, Summer Hours is that rare film that pays respect to family by treating it with honesty.

Looking like death warmed over, Jack Lemmon plays the aging father of Ted Danson. Always proud of being able to fend for himself, Lemmon despises being reliant upon others, but his enfeebled state does not allow him his old independence. For his part, Danson resents having to care for his dad as he would for an infant. Things take an upward turn when a "Doctor Feelgood" (Zakes Mokae) enters the scene, pumping Lemmon full of self-confidence. But then Lemmon is stricken with cancer, an affliction that he can't jolly himself out of. As the reality of his imminent death strikes everyone around him, Lemmon retreats into fantasy, recalling the past happy events of his life as though they're happening here and now. The rest of the family humors their dying dad, and in so doing draws closer together than they've been in years. TV sitcom maestro Gary David Goldberg co-produced and directed Dad, and also adapted the screenplay from the novel by William Wharton.

When there's a full moon over Brooklyn, anything can happen, and everything happens in the neighborhood where widowed bookkeeper Loretta Castorini (Cher) lives. First, Loretta agrees to marry a man she does not love, Johnny Cammareri (Danny Aiello), simply because he knows how to propose properly. Before the wedding can take place, Cammareri must visit his dying mother in Sicily. In his absence, Loretta is supposed to try to patch up the differences between Johnny and his brother, bakery operator Ronny Cammareri (Nicolas Cage). Having never forgiven Johnny for indirectly causing the accident that crippled him, Ronny flies into a rage whenever his brother's name is mentioned. He does, however, fall for Loretta like a ton of bricks. After a torrid affair, Loretta tries to avoid Ronny out of respect to Johnny, but he's just too fascinating to resist. Meanwhile, Loretta's father (Vincent Gardenia) is fooling around with his mistress Mona (Anita Gillette), while Loretta's mother (Olympia Dukakis) is wooed by a college professor (John Mahoney).
