Dick Dale was already on the way to a full-scale comeback when Quentin Tarantino's film Pulp Fiction turned Dale's 1962 hit "Miserlou" into a major sensation. But there is much more to the King of the Surf Guitar than one hit, as this definitive anthology amply demonstrates. Better Shred Than Dead features instrumentals that show off Dale's dazzling, percussive technique and Middle Eastern and Latin influences ("Let's Go Trippin'," "Hava Nagila," "Miserlou," "Spanish Kiss") as well as some lesser-known vocal numbers. More recent material is also included, such as his 1987 duet with Stevie Ray Vaughan on "Pipeline," plus material culled from the first two albums of his comeback years and various other sources. All hail the king, back on his throne after far too many years. –Daniel Durchholz

GNP's Greatest Hits is a fairly good collection of all the prime Dick Dale material – "King of the Surf Guitar," "Let's Go Trippin'," "Miserlou," "Death of a Gremmie" – but it's been supplanted by Rhino's superior, definitive single-disc King of the Surf Guitar.

Rhino closes its five-volume rock instrumentals series with an 18-track outing devoted to surf guitar. This fast-paced, prickly, and frequently exciting form may not be among the most diversified structurally, but if does offer some surging playing from its practitioners. They range from founding father Dick Dale to its most popular bands, the Surfaris, Belairs, Ventures, and Chantays. While not particularly a hardcore surf collection, this disc certainly outlines its virtues, and the tunes were long enough to display guitar proficiency, but short enough to prevent self-indulgence and repetition.

At the beginning of the 1960s, a style of rock was born, evoking the new surfing fashion in California. Initially instrumental on electric guitar, this sunny universe, symbol of freedom, encounters in swimsuits, tanned athletes and big waves, then inspired songs on this theme. Bruno Blum returns to the roots and birth of surf rock by revealing and commenting on irresistible recordings by its precursors, such as the Hawaiian Sol Ho'opi'i, Chet Atkins, Duane Eddy but also by its first performers, including the Ventures, Dick Dale and the Revels. Not to mention vocal groups like the Beach Boys, who began their career singing about the world of surfing, an integral part of the American myth.

Behind many of the great rock’n’roll instrumental acts of the late 1950s and early 60s was a great producer. The Fireballs had Norman Petty, the Champs had Dave Burgess, the Ventures had Bob Reisdorff, Sandy Nelson had Richie Podolor, Johnny & the Hurricanes had Harry Balk and, perhaps most significantly, Duane Eddy had Lee Hazlewood, who not only produced but also wrote many of his signature recordings. It took the emergence of Hazlewood and Eddy to turn what might have seemed a passing fad for rock’n’roll instrumentals into an identifiable genre. Previously, records without vocals tended to be regarded as novelties, but after ‘Moovin’ N’ Groovin’’ entered the charts early in 1958, followed by the Top 10 success of ‘Rebel-’Rouser’, such discs became a stand-alone category and soon every record company sought their own twangy guitar act.
