The cast is wonderfully voiced, and the orchestra and chorus sound marvelous, and really that's all that matters in the long run. Not that many people are all that familiar with Theodora, despite Sellars' sensational production of a few years ago, and hopefully this new Blu-ray can help bring this beautiful piece to a wider audience. Highly recommended.

Theodora (HWV 68) is an oratorio in three acts by George Frideric Handel, set to an English libretto by Thomas Morell. The oratorio concerns the Christian martyr Theodora and her Christian-converted Roman lover, Didymus. Handel wrote Theodora during his last period of composition, his Indian summer. He was sixty-four years old when he began working on it in June 1749. He had written the oratorios Solomon and Susanna the previous year. Theodora would be his second-to-last oratorio…

The Gospel of Thomas

The Gospel of Thomas by Leonardo Paolo Lovari
English | November 29th, 2019 | ISBN: 8831427059 | 144 pages | EPUB | 5.64 MB

The Gospel of Thomas is an apocryphal gospel that gathers 114 sayings of Jesus. His composition date is debated among scholars: some consider it a contemporary of the synoptic gospels, if not even prior to these, whose dating is not later than the end of I century; but most scholars believe that it is later, as it would show a partial dependence on the canonical gospels, and date it to the middle of the second century, in 140.

Lutenist Thomas Dunford’s first project for Warner Classics is a complete Handel programme with his Ensemble Jupiter, and his longstanding musical partners Lea Desandre and lestyn Davies. The album stems from Dunford's desire to bring together these two sublime voices and tell a love story through Handel’s most beautiful spiritual music. During the pandemic, Thomas and Lea went through Handel's entire English-language oeuvre to build a narrative Dunford has dubbed ‘a Baroque West Side Story’. The album features arias from Semele, Theodora, Saul, Susanna, Esther, and more.
