Noir jazz and after–midnight blues meet in the intriguing Twin Danger. Featuring singer Vanessa Bley (daughter of jazz innovator Paul Bley) and sax player Stuart Matthewman (co-founder of Sade, Sweetback, and producer for Grammy-winner Maxwell). The self-titled debut features a unique take on the alterna-hit, “No One Knows” by Queens of the Stone Age. Essentially a prequel to David Lynch and Mark Frost's earlier TV series "Twin Peaks". The first half-hour or so concerns the investigation by FBI Agent Chet Desmond (Chris Isaak) and his partner Sam Stanley (Kiefer Sutherland) into the murder of night-shift waitress Teresa Banks in the small Washington state town of Deer Meadow. When Desmond finds a mysterious clue to the murder, he inexplicably disappears. The film then cuts to one year later in the nearby town of Twin Peaks and follows the events during the last week in the life of Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) a troubled teenage girl with two boyfriends; the hot-tempered rebel Bobby Briggs (Dana Ashbrook) and quiet biker James Hurley (James Marshall), her drug addiction, and her relationship with her difficult (and possible schizophrenic) father Leland (Ray Wise), a story in which her violent murder was later to motivate much of the TV series. Commissioned by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO), TWIN CINEMA was written for the Stradivari Quartet and musicians of the SSO for its chamber series (16 April 2022). The concept of the work is based on the Singaporean poetic form of twin cinema, where two separate columns of poetry may be read separately, or across, as a single poem. A well-known twin cinema poem is ‘Two Voices’, penned by the then 13-year-old Janine Shum, about a double narrative contrasting the lives and voices of an Afghan girl and a Singaporean girl.
