After the death of the President, his successor is on the campaign trail to be re-elected. On a stop in Colorado, he is suddenly snowed in and he and his entourage are forced to take shelter in a small diner. Of course, the group completely take over from the diner's owner and his French-Canadian waitress. Also in the diner is a local redneck and a married couple. Suddenly, the movie moves into a suspense film as the President learns that Iraq has invaded Kuwait and slaughtered hundreds of American soldiers. Setting up temporary communications, the President announces that he will launch a nuclear attack on Iraq immediately if the country does not withdraw. Iraq reacts that they have 23 nuclear missiles trained on the US that they are ready to launch. Tensions mount with the involved civilians offering a different viewpoint to the President from the normal opinions of his advisers.

This is just another roadside cafeteria. Gino, who enters it discreetly, is an armed robber … without an arm! He tries to hold up the place but fails pitifully: the pretty waitress won't allow! Two amateur kidnappers take a rich teenage girl hostage and want to exchange her for ransom. But their victim is not easy to deal with. Two singers meet in the cafeteria by chance and talk about a stolen song and a stolen woman. Five seventy-year-old retired robbers also meet at the cafeteria - where their hideout used to be - and work out a last caper. In the end, after having tried to steal from each other, go away together.

Des boxeurs de bonne volonté l'ont convoyée jusqu'au Palais des Sports ; ils la laissent repartir avec un quadragénaire empressé qui lui offre un dîner fin chez Maxim's. Pour échapper aux conséquences de ce dîner, Agathe s'invente une tante, qui habite soit-disant avenue Victor-Hugo ; elle en sera quitte pour passer la nuit sur la banquette du palier d'un sixième étage. Au petit matin, elle partira jusqu'à Orly avec l'un des locataires, un pilote de ligne, qui doit s'envoler pour Nice ; mais elle n'ose pas accepter le prix du billet. Un vieux beau, devant qui elle accumule les mensonges, l'abandonne et Agathe n'a plus que la ressource de faire, à nouveau, de l'auto-stop…

David Lynch wrote and directed this look at two women who find themselves walking a fine line between truth and deception in the beautiful but dangerous netherworld of Hollywood. A beautiful woman (Laura Elena Harring) riding in a limousine along Los Angeles' Mulholland Drive is targeted by a would-be shooter, but before he can pull the trigger, she is injured when her limo is hit by another car. The woman stumbles from the wreck with a head wound, and in time makes her way into an apartment with no idea of where or who she is. As it turns out, the apartment is home to an elderly woman who is out of town, and is allowing her niece Betty (Naomi Watts) to stay there; Betty is a small-town girl from Canada who wants to be an actress, and her aunt was able to arrange an audition with a film director for her.
