Most people think of the legendary Ronnie James Dio as one of heavy metal's sage elder statesmen, but when his newly minted namesake band performed at the 1983 Castle Donington Monsters of Rock Festival, fresh off the release of its soon-to-be seminal debut album, Holy Diver, the group behaved like a bunch of hungry young upstarts with everything to prove…

After playing a major role in five positively classic heavy metal albums of the late '70s and early '80s (three with Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow and two with Black Sabbath), it seemed that singer Ronnie James Dio could truly do no wrong. So it wasn't all that surprising – impressive, but not surprising – when he struck gold yet again when launching his solo vehicle, Dio, via 1983's terrific Holy Diver album. Much like those two, hallowed Sabbath LPs, Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules, Holy Diver opened at full metallic throttle with the frenetic "Stand Up and Shout," before settling into a dark, deliberate, and hypnotic groove for the timelessly epic title track – a worthy successor to glorious triumphs past like Rainbow's "Stargazer" and the Sabs' "Sign of the Southern Cross."

In 1989 big line-up changes occurred within Dio. Guitarist Craig Goldy was replaced by 19-year-old Rowan Robertson; keyboardist Clive Schnell - in the group since 1983 – gave way to Jens Johannsen; founding bassist Jimmy Bain left and the role was filled by Teddy Cook; and most surprising of all, Ronnie’s old mate from Black Sabbath, VinNy Appice, went, with former AC/DC drummer Simon Wright filling his shoes. But, after a brief Sabbath re-union in 1993, which saw the album Dehumaniser released, Appice came back, alongside more new members: guitarist Tracy G, keyboardist Scott Warren of Warrant and bassist Jeff Pilson of Dokken. During this era, the band abandoned fantasy themed songs and focused on modern issues As a result, some fans regard the albums made during this period – notably 1993's Strange Highways - as somewhat lacking, while the majority view them positively, as a step away from the outdated sound of the 1980s. While out touring and promoting Strange Highways, Dio performed at The Edge in Palo Alto, California on October 2nd, 1994. Putting on a solid and hugely enjoyable show, the entire event was recorded for live radio broadcast along the West Coast.

DYNAMIC 1994 BROADCAST PERFORMANCE FROM DIO ON RJD s 52ND BIRTHDAY Formed in 1982 by vocalist Ronnie James Dio, after he left Black Sabbath with intentions to form a new band with fellow former Black Sabbath member Vinny Appice, the band's drummer, Dio released ten studio albums and had numerous line-up changes over the years, with Dio himself being the only constant member. The band dissolved in 2010 when Ronnie James Dio died of stomach cancer at the age of 67, but Dio has sold more than 20 million albums worldwide and remain among the most popular and successful metal bands in history. In 1992, Dio and Appice briefly re-joined Sabbath for a tour and the album Dehumanizer, following which Dio reformed and set about recording their sixth album, Strange Highways.
