In 1997 Zakiya Hooker released her second CD "Flavors Of The Blues" worldwide on Pointblank/Virgin Records. Flavors Of The Blues, opens with a cover of the Robert Johnson classic “Stones In My Passway”, illustrating Zakiya’s supple blues and smooth, jazz-inflected style. The rest of the songs range from tempestuous (“Art of Divorce” and “Let’s Do Something”) to delicate and moody (“Protect Me From The Blues”, “New Orleans Rain”, and the torch gem “Drowning In Your Love”). Joining his daughter and Charlie Musselwhite in the studio, John Lee Hooker lends his inimitable presence on the track “Bit By Love (Hard Times)”. Flavors Of The Blues documents the resilience of the human spirit. In her own unique voice, Zakiya shares the strength gained from a lifetime of experience.

For the first time a blues-woman decorates the booklet's cover of a 3CD volume, in the "Blues Masters" series. Meet Bessie Smith, or better "The Empress of the Blues" as she was nicknamed. A whole CD is dedicated to her music, with rare, original recordings from the first decades of 20th century. Volume 11 includes also, the famous harmonica virtuosi Sonny Boy "Williamsons" I & II, country blues great guitarist Furry Lewis and finally the delta blues master, Robert Junior Lockwood with the amazing 70 year career. Very few women seem to play bass, but Queen Sylvia Embry was a fine player who impressed Willie Dixon so much he sent her to Europe to play on the American Blues Festival tours. She also had an expressive, deep-toned Gospel voice that made her a hit on the Chicago club circuit, and was even more to the fore when she led her own band.
