One of the greatest tenors of his time, Plácido Domingo particularly excelled in the Verdian repertoire, in which he rose to fame from the very beginning of his career. This collection gathers highlights from its major contributions to the repertoire, in the roles of Radamès, Don Alvaro, Otello, Don Carlo and Ernani. The list of major conductors and singers he rubbed shoulders with during this golden era is dizzying: Montserrat Caballé, Mirella Freni, Katia Ricciarelli, Ruggero Raimondi, Riccardo Muti, Carlo Maria Giulini, Lorin Maazel, James Levine and more.

One of the world's most renowned tenors, Plácido Domingo – along with his frequent collaborators Luciano Pavarotti and José Carreras – is largely responsible for the increasing mainstream popularity of opera among contemporary listeners. He became established quickly as one of the greatest lyric tenors of his time, and one who could also sing dramatic tenor roles with nearly equally fine results. Domingo's forays into Latin and pop music were also successful, earning him Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards as well as silver, gold, platinum, and multi-platinum-selling albums. As his voice deepened with age in the 2010s, he continued to perform as a baritone. Born March 21, 1941, in Madrid, Spain, Domingo's parents were both singers in the zarzuela, Spain's distinctive national form of musical theater. His family relocated to Mexico in 1950; there he studied vocal technique, as well as piano and conducting, at the Mexico City Conservatory.

Having risen to fame in Italian opera, Plácido Domingo (then at the height of his artistic powers) later took up the Wagnerian repertoire with undeniable success. He played both Tristan and Siegfried on stage in around 200 performances each! This collection includes his noted performance as Tristan in the praised Antonio Pappano version (featuring Nina Stemme), love duets from Siegfried and Tristan with Deborah Voigt, major scenes from the Ring conducted by Pappano with Natalie Dessay and Violeta Urmana… It also includes, for the first time in digital, a live recording of the first act of Die Walküre, with Daniel Barenboim at the baton!

The works included on this album span 25 years of creative activity. While current projects are always my focus, looking back is not something I often do; however, this recording confronted me with compositions representing a good part of my creative life. Most interesting was to notice that, although my music has changed through the years, there are traits common to all these pieces. These are elements that encompass aspects ranging from the expressive to the technical. A penchant for certain types of melodic constructions, harmonies, and orchestration choices is always present in these works. Another common element is the use of idioms that stem out of Afro-Caribbean and, more specifically, from the folk and popular music of Puerto Rico’ Composer, Roberto Sierra.

This greatest-hits collection by tenor Plácido Domingo follows on a similar 50 Greatest Tracks release devoted to his Three Tenors comrade Luciano Pavarotti, which was commercially well received and seems to have done what it set out to do. Let it be known that the way to understand opera is to go and see one rather than picking and choosing from among the catalog of even the greatest singers, company in which Domingo inarguably resides. That said, Deutsche Grammophon has assembled a highly listenable group of Domingo tracks that gives casual listeners an idea of the range of his talent, a range that was probably greater than that of the other two of the Three Tenors.

Domingo Hindoyan’s exciting programme of French repertoire includes early and late orchestral masterpieces by Debussy, Roussel’s sumptuous and brilliantly scored 2nd ballet suite from Bacchus et Ariadne, and the rarely heard and spectacular La Péri, subtitled Poèm Dansé by the highly self-critical but brilliant Dukas. ‘Of all the recent conductor signings at UK orchestras, this is the one that intrigues me the most’ The Spectator on Domingo Hindoyan’s appointment as Chief conductor of the RLPO.

If you think you've heard it all, you're wrong. The three big guys are indeed back, in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, with a rabidly enthusiastic crowd to welcome them. They sing many favorites– "Granada," "Because," "Nessun dorma"–and there are a pair of medleys: one devoted to love songs, and one called "Medley of the World," which ends with a rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone" that might just bring tears to your eyes. If the truth be known, the three tenors have put on 8 years since we first heard them together, and a fair amount of bloom is off their rose-like voices–with Domingo's ardency sounding a bit hard-edged, Carreras's tone even more spread than before, and some of Pavarotti's gold tarnished and his breath shorter. Suffice it to say that older CDs by these three formerly-really-great tenors are worth their weight in gold, compared to the bronze you'll find here. But the classy James Levine at the helm keeps the "event" going with passion, and it's hard not to get caught up in the excitement. –Robert Levine
