Neil Young has announced the release of Toast, a shelved 2001 album he made with Crazy Horse and declined to put out at the time because it was "so sad."
Aptly, the album is heavy and distressed, brimming with electrifying tension. Even its sweet-sounding opening track, 'Quit', features the refrain, 'Don't say you love me'. 'Standing in the Light of Love' and 'Goin' Home' let the Horse off the tether in fields of overdriven guitar; an out-of-work logger grapples with his faith on the breakneck 'Timberline'; and on 'Gateway of Love', Young dreams of a less painful future over a hypnotizing 10 minutes, leading into the somber, brokedown 'How Ya Doin'?' The songwriter sums up the album best during its shadowy finale 'Boom Boom Boom': 'All I got is a broken heart, and I don't try to hide it when I play my guitar'.

Tango is the product of people drawn together on the margins of Buenos Aires in the late nineteenth century. From the slum districts on the outskirts of the capital to the ports, the music of the people merged – Andalusian Flamenco, southern Italian melodies, Cuban habanera, African candomblé percussion and milonga. Alexander Sevastian, the four-time first prize winner of international accordion competitions, offers here a virtuosic version of some of the great tangos by Piazzolla and other famous composers. Five stars for Ken Burns on this excellent compilation! I really like that Ken Burns was able to capture jazz from all the major periods of jazz from the traditional to fusion. Some say, as one reviewer did here, that bop was "crammed" in and traditional jazz was represented a little healthy in this series.

On her third self-released album, Suzy Bogguss, one of the finest female vocalists living and working in Nashville, allows one of her many passions to come to the surface on Swing. With Asleep at the Wheel's Ray Benson in the producer's chair, Bogguss kicks out 12 classy pop, jazz, and swing tunes with a smoking band making a timeless sound. Benson knows the feel of this music inside and out (and brought his violin player, the Stephane Grappelli-inspired Jason Roberts, along for the ride), and Bogguss, whose mom is a big Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald fan, can sing virtually anything – but has a special affinity for the swing book – with a twist. There are nuggets of the repertoire here, such as Nat King Cole's "Straighten Up and Fly Right" and Duke Ellington's "Do Nothing 'Til You Hear From Me" as well as "Comes Love" – closely associated with Billie Holiday – and the great Ken Burgan tune "Sweetheart."
