There was a time when jazz musicians were commonly recruited to play on pop records, because their purview was so broad that they could mold themselves into any context. Born near Naples, Egidio Romualdo Duni (1708-1775) enjoyed success with operas presented in Rome and Milan in the 1730s before moving to London in 1736 and then to the Netherlands for a decade. The six trio sonatas were published in Rotterdam around 1739, while the attractive collection of minuets and contredanses appeared in London the previous year. Together they form Duni’s only published collections of chamber music; the greater part of his output remained opera, both serious and comic, and the melodic flair of these works displays the artistic signature of a composer for the stage.

After two highly acclaimed albums with her jazz quartet, Elina Duni issues her most intimate recording to date. The entirely solo Partir features the Tirana-born vocalist, accompanied by her own piano, guitar and frame drum, interpreting songs from very diverse sources. From folk songs and chansons to songs of singer-songwriters. Here we find traditional music from Albania, Kosovo, Armenia, Macedonia, Switzerland and Arab-Andalusia as well as Jacques Brel’s “Je ne sais pas”, Alain Oulman’s “Meu Amor”, Domenico Modugno’s “Amara Terra Mia”, Elina’s own “Let Us Dive In” and more. Duni’s uniquely-expressive voice and pared-down arrangements locate a common thread of longing that runs through the material. Partir was recorded at Studios La Buissone in the South of France in July 2017, and produced by Manfred Eicher.

En 2018, Elina Duni plongeait dans le grand bain du solo. Ou du moins apposait pour la première fois son nom seul sur la pochette d’un album. Après deux disques à la tête d’un quartet plutôt estampillé jazz, la chanteuse de Tirana signait avec Partir publié chez ECM un magnifique recueil de pièces évoquant aussi bien l’amour que la perte et le départ, interprétant au piano, à la guitare et aux percussions, des œuvres provenant du folklore ou de la variété… Avec Lost Ships, Duni poursuit sa collaboration avec le jeune guitariste britannique Rob Luft entamée en 2017. Le duo a réuni des chansons d’amour certes mais aussi des chansons d’exil et de souffrance.
