Dvorak Symphony No. 9

For the first recording on its own label, the Washington, D.C.-based National Symphony Orchestra turns to two heroes of American music. While in New York at the start of the 20th century, Czech composer Dvořák fell in love with indigenous folk tunes, incorporating them into arguably America’s first symphony.

Dvořák: Symphony No. 9, Op. 95 "From the New World" captures the iconic blend of European classical traditions and American inspirations in a stunning performance by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra under the baton of Nikolaus Harnoncourt.

This new recording from Christoph König and Soloists Européens Luxembourg features Dvorak's evergreen ''New World'' symphony alongside Charles Ives's Washington's Birthday and Aaron Copland's Quiet City. In the 19th and 20th centuries, for those leaving the Old World - meaning in most cases Europe - America represented the hope of starting a new life unshackled from the past and its politics. America was, for many, a land of dreams. It is this reflective and dreamy quality which unites these three different compositions, each one describing in its own way the land once known as the New World.

Following on from his critically acclaimed Lutosławski programme, the conductor Krzysztof Urbański pursues his collaboration with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester et Alpha. The New World Symphony is a work that has always fascinated Krzysztof Urbański: ‘It was only when I studied Dvořák’s other symphonies that I came to understand the principal characteristic and strength of the Ninth: simplicity.

The Symphony No. 9 in E minor, "From the New World", Op. 95, B. 178, popularly known as the New World Symphony, was composed by Antonín Dvořák in 1893 while he was the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America from 1892 to 1895. It premiered in New York City on 16 December 1893. It has been described as one of the most popular of all symphonies. In older literature and recordings, this symphony was – as for its first publication – numbered as Symphony No. 5.
