A-ha's sixth studio CD (seventh if their greatest-hits collection is included) came seven years after their previous album, Memorial Beach, and in that time it seems that a-ha mellowed out. They do not seem to have concern about attracting the youth/dance market, but instead seem to be focusing in on how to make perfect middle-of-the-road pop songs with '90s technology. This is not a criticism, as it produces several fantastic songs, such as "Little Black Heart" and the wonderful "I Wish That I Cared."

Songs are a heritage in Native American cultures, used for medicine of all kinds and for links to animal life, to the spirit world, to the heart, to the mind. In the past few decades, Native American music has resurfaced in full force, developing in ways that enhance and build upon past forms and methods through the use of technologies and musical ideas undreamed of in the past. This wonderful collection takes stock of both traditional and modern forms, ranging from R. Carlos Nakai, Cornel Pewewardy, and Douglas Spotted Eagle providing the expected flute performances; to Bill Miller mixing Native American approaches into folk and country ballads; to the free-floating jazz of Charles Jefferson, whose trumpet-led "500 Drums" is one of many highlights of the album (the album itself is a highlight, in fact, no doubt of that). Between Father Sky and Mother Earth is by no means an ultimate collection of Native American music (a single disc isn't room enough by far), but it is one that can be considered both an essential starting point and an excellent way station.

Earth, Wind & Fire were one of the most musically accomplished, critically acclaimed, and commercially popular funk bands of the '70s. Conceived by drummer, bandleader, songwriter, kalimba player, and occasional vocalist Maurice White, EWF's all-encompassing musical vision used funk as its foundation, but also incorporated jazz, smooth soul, gospel, pop, rock & roll, psychedelia, blues, folk, African music, and, later on, disco. Cardboard sleeve (mini LP) reissue from Earth Wind & Fire featuring the high-fidelity Blu-spec CD format (compatible with standard CD players) and DSD mastering (subject to change). Comes with a reprint of the Japanese edition LP obi, a new description, and lyrics. Explosions in the Sky's second effort takes a more studied, even lush approach to the literate chaos of their 2001 debut. But put on your sad sack thinking cap now, because Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place is a contemplative and heady rush of masterful melancholia. Its six songs are multi-minute, slow motion workouts of gentle electric guitar plucks and subtle/sudden washes of percussion - they're still instrumental, but as lyrical as anything in the indie rock universe. "Only Moment We Were Alone" turns on a simple, melancholy guitar figure, the drums shifting from insistent catch-up mode to a studied march built to introduce the next layered crescendo…
