1981's Earthshaker is the only unanimous moment of Y&T's lengthy career. The only studio album that came close to capturing the power and energy of the San Francisco quartet's legendary concerts onto disc, the band's third L.P. was their first for new label A&M, and the first to see their original moniker Yesterday & Today shortened to its better-known incarnation…

By 1974, the James Gang, featuring vocalist Roy Kenner and guitarist Tommy Bolin, had run out of steam, and founding member Jimmy Fox decided to disband the group. One short year later, the Gang was back with a new line-up (featuring Bubba Keith and Frank Zappa-lookalike Richard Shack) and a new LP, 'Newborn'. The album went nowhere, and Keith and Shack split…

Amazon Review by Stuart Jefferson
54 minutes in length approximately. The tracks, from the original analogue tapes, have been remastered. The sound is fairly crisp and open. The booklet contains some good info on the bands, producers, and the era.
This collection does contain some rare West Coast surf music, from the small Titan Records label. This was one of a myriad of small, independent record companies in the late 50's/early 60's that released surf music hoping to cash-in on the surf/instrumental craze (which only lasted a short time),then coming into vogue. Usually the vast numbers of these groups (THE SURFMEN,THE STRANGERS,THE STORMS,THE PLAYBOYS,among others), sold their records only locally,or at best, regionally. Very few of these groups made it to the national level in sales. It's interesting that (the late) Gary Usher (heard here),who was responsible (and famous) for dozens of teen records (both instrumental and vocal),made his first recordings for Titan.

With the emergence of Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience during the late '60s, the path was cleared for other hard-rockin' "trios." Arguably, the finest to emerge from the subsequent American crop was the James Gang. Despite penning a few of classic rock radio's most enduring songs, the James Gang ultimately failed to deliver on their initial promise, as constant lineup juggling ultimately derailed the group. The Gang's roots stretch back to 1966 in Cleveland, OH, where drummer Jim Fox formed the group with a few fellow Kent State University students, guitarist Glenn Schwartz and bassist Tom Kriss. But when Schwartz left to join Pacific Gas & Electric, Fox and Kriss opted to carry on with new singer/guitarist Joe Walsh. The James Gang's debut album, Yer' Album, followed in 1969, and while it didn't spawn any hits, it did set the stage perfectly for their next few releases.
