The Quatuor Ébène timed this round-the-world Beethoven cycle to coincide with Beethoven's 250th birthday in 2020, beginning a worldwide tour and fortunately completing it before the outbreak of the pandemic in that year. The cycle was recorded in Philadelphia, Vienna, Tokyo, São Paolo, Melbourne, Nairobi, and finally Paris. CD buyers get a combination of travelogue and set of work descriptions, but it's not clear that the performances were influenced in any way by the globetrotting. This is, however, a very strong Beethoven set, with full-blooded performances perhaps unexpected from a group that made its name with French quartet music.

The members of Quatuor Ébène went round the world with the complete Beethoven quartets, now they go ‘Round Midnight. This album offers a creatively conceived programme, bringing together major figures from different streams of 20th music: Arnold Schönberg, Henri Dutilleux and four masters of jazz and popular idioms – Thelonius Monk, Cole Porter, Henry Mancini and Victor Young.

Fidèles à leur curiosité naturelle, les quatre instrumentistes du Quatuor Ébène réunissent sur leur dernier album deux chefs-d’œuvre nocturnes composés à chaque extrémité du XXe siècle, le quatuor Ainsi la nuit de Dutilleux et le sextuor à cordes Verklärte Nacht (« Nuit transfigurée ») de Schönberg. In a characterstically imaginative move, the Quatour Ebene complements Schubert's sublime Quintet for two violins, viola and two cellos (Gautier Capucon joins the ensemble) with a group of his songs - sensitively arranged by the quartet's cellist, Rapphael Merlin, and sung by German baritone Matthias Goerne, one of the world's great interpreters of lieder.

Eternal Stories might just turn out to be one of the best albums that Portal has ever recorded. He could well have been thinking of his beloved Charlie Parker, who in 1949 realised his dream of making a recording with a string section. Eternal Stories is not some kind of attempt at a remake, but comprises completely new pieces and two new arrangements of classic Portal numbers, a late work by Piazzolla and astonishing contributions from members of Quatuor Ébène itself.

“In themselves, Beethoven’s quartets represent an odyssey, a round-the-world voyage,” says Quatuor Ébène. The French ensemble is marking the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth with a global tour of 21 countries. In the course of their Beethoven Around the World tour, the Ébène will make live recordings in seven different cities: Vienna, Philadelphia, Tokyo, São Paulo, Melbourne, Nairobi and Paris. This first release, recorded at the Konzerthaus in Vienna, comprises the first two ‘Razumovsky’ Quartets, op 59 No 1 and op 59 No 2.
