Hey Elbow consists of Julia Ringdahl (vocals/guitar), Ellen Petersson (horns/electronics), and Liam Amner (drums). With a background in jazz and an ear for distortion they create eccentric pop music with a big sound. Formed in 2013, Hey Elbow took its name from an aerobics warm-up exercise they were taught while standing in the audience waiting for a show by The Knife. With their foundations in jazz and musical education, combined with an interest in noise, improvisation and freedom, they make oddly haunting pop music with a unique and personal expression. None and all of the three members are fronting the band, a democratic philosophy that gives the flugelhorn as much space as the singing, the electronics and the drums. "In our music the sound is at least as important as the actual compositions.

First mentioned around the time of the release of Elbow's debut album Asleep in the Back, dead in the boot brings together B-sides and the odd non-album track from the band’s thirteen year recording career. The early years are represented by "None One" from the original Newborn EP released by Uglyman Records in August of 2000 and "Lucky With Disease" from October of 2001. The band’s most recent work is showcased by "Buffalo Ghosts", which is the B-side to the limited edition 10” vinyl release of "Open Arms". In addition there are ten further tracks that demonstrate the depth of Elbow’s songwriting, comprising heart wrenching ballads, loping steel guitar ornamented grooves ("The Long War Shuffle") and blues-drenched howls ("McGreggor").

"Loss is a part of a life this long" sings Elbow frontman Guy Garvey on "Dexter & Sinister," the sanguine opening cut on the venerable post-Brit-pop group's eighth full-length effort Giants of All Sizes. The follow-up to 2017's relatively buoyant and unsurprisingly chart-topping Little Fictions, the nine-track set retains the hard-won wisdom of its predecessor, but there's a strong current of unease running through the proceedings.

In 2001, John Wort Hannam quit his teaching job and spent 10 months depleting his savings while sitting at his kitchen table, wearing a lucky hat, and writing his first ten songs. Those songs would become his first recording, Pocket Full Of Holes, released in 2003. Seventeen years later, the Alberta musician is releasing his seventh full-length recording Acres Of Elbow Room and has a few feathers in that lucky hat for his first six offerings. Feathers that include a JUNO nomination, a Canadian Folk Music Award for Best Album of the Year, A CBC Galaxie Rising Star Award, a Kerrville Texas New Folk win, and numerous Western Canadian Music Award and Canadian Folk Music Award nominations. Recent years have seen a great deal of change in John’s life – becoming a Dad, turning 50, a move to the big city (Lethbridge), a marital reckoning, a long, deep bout of depression, and episodes of losing his singing voice. But John has emerged a better songwriter, a better singer, and a better player.

Elbow recorded their sixth album at Real World Studios, making the connection between themselves and Peter Gabriel plain. Much of this connection comes from the husky, subdued rasp of lead singer Guy Garvey, but the band on a whole favors a similar kind of accessible art rock where the textures are lucid yet elliptical while the songs are sturdy and melodic, wearing their accouterments well.
