Earlier this year, I reviewed a live recording, made in Finland, of The Dream of Gerontius conducted by Nicholas Collon. The title role was to have been sung by Allan Clayton, I understand, but he was indisposed and his place was taken by John Findon. Since I have long wanted to hear Clayton in this role, his withdrawal from that project was a disappointment but now we have a chance to hear him in a performance given at the BBC Proms in August 2022.

The centuries do indeed ‘roll away’ as the libretto addresses questions of empire—Roman and Victorian—and Britain’s place in the world. But that shouldn’t detract from the music; this is simply glorious and worthy of the mature Elgar.

From Arturo Toscanini and Sir John Barbirolli to Riccardo Muti and Antonio Pappano in our own time, Italian-heritage performers have often brought special qualities of sympathy and understanding to Edward Elgar’s (1857-1934) music. Now comes a new recording made in the ‘boot’ of southern Italy, lending Mediterranean warmth and passion to a trio of Elgarian masterpieces.

Founded just after the war by Thomas Beecham as the instrument of his total artistic freedom, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra has become one of the most prominent advocates of British music and gained the nickname of “Britain’s national orchestra”. This collection highlights the major romantic and modern composers of the country, including the lesser known but still fascinating Granville Bantock, Arthur Sullivan, Henry Wood and Arthur Bliss. Many top-class conductors have collaborated with the orchestra along its rich history, here represented by Thomas Beecham, André Previn, Charles Groves, Charles Mackerras, Malcolm Sargent and Andrew Litton. Soloists featured include Jacqueline du Pré, Christopher Parkening, Nigel Kennedy and John Ogdon.

Vladimir Ashkenazy, who was appointed principal conductor of the Sydney Symphony in 2009, puts his orchestra through its paces in this vibrant Exton album. This third volume of Edward Elgar's series features Enigma Variations & In The South overture. The people at Exton, a Japanese audiophile label, have once again produced an impressive recording with plenty of headroom. The imaging is so natural that you can almost visualize the space between the instruments, but yet the orchestral sound is rich and full of impact. The strings shimmer in the high notes, and the bass drums, rather than being heard, are felt like distant thunder. Highly recommended.

The golden age of string orchestra repertoire must certainly be the period spanning the final decades of the 19th century to the early 20th century. The density of sound, great dynamic range, long phrases and virtuosity that are uniquely possible with this combination of instruments saw it become a particularly cherished ensemble for many of the greatest composers of the day. This same era also witnessed the birth of the Great National Schools and the influence of composers’ native folk melodies on their compositional output.
