Elizabeth Maconchy

Formed in 2019, award-winning violin and cello duo GAIA have rapidly won plaudits for their pioneering programming and bold and daring performances.Their debut album release features three works specially written for the duo, and also bears testimony to their championing of works by underrepresented and overlooked voices from classical music’s past.

Pianists Rebeca Omordia and Martin Jones present this album of world premiere recordings of works for piano and orchestra by three major composers.

Relationships is an album formed from the various strands of familial, personal and musical connections between the composers and performers involved. Elizabeth Maconchy, was a cousin of Giles Swayne’s mother and a major influence on his musical development. Nicola LeFanu is Maconchy’s daughter and Swayne’s cousin.

Her works here are almost all unpublished and virtually unknown since their first performances from manuscript, and span several decades of the composer’s career from the time of her studies with Vaughan Williams in the mid-1920s through to her committed espousal of the British modernist aesthetic by the 1960s and 70s.
