The ‘Ellipse’ is a timeless, never-ending orbit through space.Planets and moons move around space creating ellipses and the different pieces of music in our album feel like they gravitate towards each other creating a universe of sound.“Music contains all in sublime form. All human emotions are expressed; love, bliss, resignation, death. It can all be expressed by music. It is all within us. We make it, we compose it, we perform it.” (Frieda Belinfante)

The instrumentation on the album of the vocalist Barbara Wiernik is rather unusual. In addition to the vocalist, we hear the clarinetist Hélène Duret, the cellist Sigrid Vandenbogaerde and the vibraphonist and marimba player Bart Quartier. The last two musicians mentioned have a quite classical background.

En février 1939 s’éteignait Franz Schmidt, compositeur autrichien de la première moitié du XXe siècle. Le contexte tragique de l’époque a pratiquement occulté cette disparition, et ce compositeur reste encore aujourd’hui assez méconnu. Il a pourtant écrit une page importante et singulière de l’histoire de la musique autrichienne, dont les deux quintettes présentés sur ce disque, joyaux longtemps oubliés de la musique de chambre. Dans le domaine de la musique concertante avec piano il ne composa que des pièces requérant la main gauche seule, à l’intention du pianiste autrichien Paul Wittgenstein. Deux de ses trois quintettes font l’objet de cet enregistrement.

Der österreichische Komponist Franz Schmidt ist als Verfasser der romantischen Oper »Notre Dame« und des Oratoriums »Das Buch mit sieben Siegeln« sowie von vier Sinfonien bekannt.
