Elvis Presley mag dan de belangrijkste persoon zijn in de Amerikaanse populaire muziek van de 20e eeuw, maar daarmee is hij nog niet de beste en zeker niet de meest consistente. Niemand kan echter ontkennen dat deze muzikant het meest verantwoordelijk is geweest voor de groei van de internatational populariteit van rock & roll. Zijn muziek uit de vijftiger jaren legde de basis voor rock & roll; zijn explosieve en seksuele uitstraling tijdens optredens werden standaards voor het visuele imago van de muziek; zijn stem was ongelooflijk krachtig en veelzijdig.

Sony are to release Elvis Presley‘s final Nashville session (from 1971), free from overdubs, as an expanded 4CD deluxe set or a 2LP vinyl package.
The sessions documented on the forthcoming Back in Nashville spawned recordings that ended up all over the place, including on Elvis Sings the Wonderful World of Christmas (1971), the gospel He Touched Me (1972), Elvis Now (1972) and Elvis (1973).
The four-CD version of Back in Nashville features an impressive 82 ‘undubbed’ tracks across themed discs (‘country/folk, pop, religious, Christmas etc.) and includes outtakes as well as master recordings.

By the time RCA Records and producer Felton Jarvis arrived to start recording some of his shows on August 21, 1969, Elvis Presley had already conquered Las Vegas. As another piece of his comeback that started with the 1968 ELVIS television special and continued with his first Memphis recordings since the mid-1950s, Elvis had been performing to sold-out crowds in the newly-opened International Hotel's main showroom since July 31. With a grueling two-shows-a-night, seven-days-a-week, schedule, Elvis had performed over 40 triumphant concerts in just three weeks. He was starting the last week of an engagement that, outside of four shows for small studio audiences during his TV special, represented his first live concerts in nearly nine years.

Hij zal de rock & roll nooit helemaal vaarwel zeggen maar vanaf de jaren zeventig liet hij zich wel in toenemende mate inspireren door blues, country en soul. In dezelfde periode ging hij ook in Las Vegas optreden met extravagante shows. In 1977 overleed The King op 42-jarige leeftijd. Veel te jong, maar hij heeft wel een oeuvre nagelaten dat de popmuziek voor altijd heeft veranderd en artiesten tot op de dag van vandaag weet te inspireren.

6 CD + 1 Blu-ray box set comprised of the audio from four of the shows (and two rehearsals) that were part of Elvis' 1972 North American tour. Originally recorded for the Elvis On Tour concert film that was released later that year, the set features a total of 145 tracks, including 91 tracks that have been previously unreleased, as well as the award-winning concert film on Blu-ray.

Elvis Presley belongs on the short list of artists who changed the course of popular music in the 20th century. He may not have invented rock & roll, but he was indisputably its first rock star, a singer whose charisma was tightly intertwined with his natural talent for a combination that seemed combustible, sexy, and dangerous when Presley seized the imagination of America with four successive number one singles in 1956. He spent the next two decades near the top of the charts, weathering changes in fashion, self-inflicted missteps, and comebacks as his music expanded and evolved.
