A renaissance artist for our times, Lera Auerbach is internationally renowned as a composer whose exquisitely crafted, emotional, and boldly imaginative music reaches a global audiences. Her 24 Preludes for Violin and Piano is a cycle of compact but ‘meaningful and complete’ works that follows the key scheme of Chopin’s 24 Préludes, while exploring stark contrasts that range from primordial darkness to naïve innocence. Using a highly original tonal language with clear references to classical traditions, this pioneering work fully represents Auerbach’s ability to put music at the service of a broader expression of human need and fallibility.

Joseph Boullogne, the Chevalier de Saint-Georges (sometimes spelled Saint-George) (December 25, 1739 – June 10, 1799) was one of the most important figures in the Paris musical scene in the second half of the 18th century, he was also famous as a swordsman and equestrian. Known as the "Black Mozart" or the "Voltaire of music" he was one of the earliest musicians of the European classical type known to have African ancestry. (…) He was a mulatto born out-of-wedlock in Guadeloupe to Nanon, a former slave of black African descent, and a white French plantation owner of noble birth, Guillaume-Pierre Tavernier de Boullogne. The child was named after his uncle George de Boullogne Saint-Georges. At the age of ten he accompanied his father to France and was enrolled in a private academy. Schooled in both the fine and martial arts, he soon distinguished himself by his extraordinary skill on horseback, in sports, fencing, and music. (…)(Wikipedia)

The album "Violin miniatures" (RecArt 0028) contains 17 musical pictures being a result of a long-time cooperation between Marcin Ostrowski and the pianist Katarzyna Kaczorowska. The subject of instrumental miniatures, interpretation of which is at the heart of the violinist’s artistic interests, is the common ground for the two discs. The stylistic diversity of the first half of the twentieth century, which is the subject of the artist's PhD dissertation, was the criterion for choosing the repertoire for CD1. Amongst eleven presented works, one can find a wide range of compositions, from the world hits from the borderline of classical and popular music to an avant-garde experiments with form and sound.

The Violin Sonatas of Johannes Brahms were the product of much self-critical reflection, and the three surviving works are from a composer mature in years. Composed around the same time as the Violin Concerto (No 1), the C minor Piano Trio and the Second Cello Sonata (Nos 2 and 3), they also echo some of his songs, such as those written to poems by Klaus Groth.

The second album by Franziska Pietsch and her Spanish piano partner Josu De Solaun is dedicated to the multifaceted world of French violin sonatas. With their usual aplomb and artistic intensity, the duo explore emotional landscapes complementing those of their previous album. Moving on from the exuberant revelry, serious tragedy and brutal reality of the sonatas by Strauss and Shostakovich, the musicians are now roving between the poles of dream and reality.
Real experiences and emotions are reflected in a visionary dream world, external reality is mirrored internally. Inner emotions and images become reality via the music, triggering new emotions: dream and reality mirror each other. Fauré, Debussy, Ravel and Poulenc create this “mirror world” in diverse ways. The common theme is the fantastical, the magic of imagination, the poetic distance to reality and the intensive engagement with inner emotions. Thus the dream world becomes a retreat – for listeners and artists alike.

Grumiaux' version remains to this day one of the best available. He and Markevitch conducting the Amsterdam Concertgebouw have a total mastery of the idiom, and the Concerto's sections unfold naturally and organically: it doesn't sound like "modern" music, but as a language entirely congenial to the performers. Tempos are middle-of-the road, close to the metronome marks, and nothing more is required to bring out the composition's searing lyricism. Grumiaux has a luminous tone, the perfect mix of radiant lyricism and despaired vehemence. Markevitch, the Concertgebouw Orchestra (glorious brass!) and the sonic engineers bring out a wealth of orchestral details from Berg's subtle and delicately intertwined textures, maybe not as much as the best modern versions
