The Alexandria Ceremonial Police Orchestra, consisting of eight men, arrive in Israel from Egypt. They have been booked by an Arab cultural center in Petah Tiqva, but through a miscommunication, the band takes a bus to Bet Hatikva, a fictional town in the middle of the Negev Desert. There is no transportation out of the city that day, and there are no hotels for them to spend the night in. The band members dine at a small restaurant where the owner, Dina (Ronit Elkabetz) invites them to stay the night at her apartment, at her friends' apartment, and in the restaurant. That night challenges all of the characters

Un jour, il n'y a pas si longtemps, une petite fanfare de la police égyptienne vint en Israël. Elle était venue pour jouer lors de la cérémonie d'inauguration d'un centre culturel arabe. Seulement à cause de la bureaucratie, d'un manque de chance ou de tout autre concours de circonstance, personne ne vint les accueillir à l'aéroport. Ils tentèrent alors de se débrouiller seuls, pour finalement se retrouver au fin fond du désert israélien dans une petite ville oubliée du monde. Un groupe de musiciens perdu au beau milieu d'une ville perdue. Peu de gens s'en souviennent, cette histoire semblait sans importance…

“D’un pas mesuré” : telle est l’indication que donne Mahler au début du premier mouvement de sa Symphonie n° 5. Celle-ci s’ouvre par une marche funèbre monumentale. La fanfare de trompettes est sans doute un lointain souvenir de l’époque où Mahler, enfant, entendait les appels de la caserne d’Iglau et assistait aux défilés militaires devant la maison de ses parents. Une maison qu’il fuyait, refusant d’assister aux coups terribles que son père portait à sa mère, jusqu’à l’en faire boiter. Cet insupportable traumatisme, Mahler finira par l’évoquer avec Freud lors d’une rencontre mémorable qui bouleversa sa vie un jour d’août 1910…
