After Peter Gabriel departed for a solo career, Genesis embarked on a long journey to find a replacement, only to wind back around to their drummer, Phil Collins, as a replacement. With Collins as their new frontman, the band decided not to pursue the stylish, jagged postmodernism of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway – a move that Gabriel would do in his solo career – and instead returned to the English eccentricity of Selling England by the Pound for its next effort, A Trick of the Tail…
In November 2019, at a sold-out show in London's Hammersmith Apollo, Steve Hackett performed the legendary Genesis album "Selling England by the Pound" in its entirety. Steve and his band also played tracks from "Spectral Mornings" (celebrating its 40th anniversary), "At the Edge of Light" and "A Trick of the Tail"…
Every year Djabe & Steve Hackett impress jazz and progressive rock fans with more and more cohesive and powerful performances. The 2023 tour has once again delivered some surprises. The most attention-grabbing of these was the interpretation of the Genesis song Carpet Crawlers, sung fantastically by Péter Kaszás behind the drums. Listening to the whole concert, we feel that the parts are coming together more and more. The musicians and the songs from the repertoire of Djabe, Djabe & Steve Hackett, Genesis and Steve Hackett form an inseparable unit. The musicians perform Camino Royale, Ace Of Wands, Buzzy Island, Last Train To Istanbul and Los Endos with elemental power and energy. These are beautifully counterpointed by lyrical compositions such as Franciska, Horizons, Tale, Hairless Heart, Firth Of Fifth. And jazz fans will not be left unsatisfied either: in Could Have Been or Central European Time, the musicians of Djabe prove that they are without a doubt the leading musicians of the Hungarian jazz scene.
In the latter half of the '90s, Phil Collins' career hit a bit of a sales slump, and instead of shamelessly chasing after another number one single, he decided to change pace and try something different. Returning to the drums, he assembled the Phil Collins Big Band, reviving the sound of such idols as Buddy Rich and Sonny Payne, but largely sticking with his original material. After a brief European tour in 1996 (which happened to feature Quincy Jones as conductor and Tony Bennett as vocalist), he created a new version of the band featuring several accomplished jazz and studio musicians in support – notably alto saxophonist Gerald Albright, but also guitarist Daryl Stuermer, tenor saxophonist James Carter, and pianists George Duke and Brad Cole, among many others, in varying roles.
Esoteric Antenna is delighted to announce the release of a new 2 CD and DVD live album by Djabe & Steve Hackett; "Life is a Journey: The Budapest Live Tapes". This wonderful concert recording was mainly recorded in Budapest in October 2017, one of a series of live concerts that followed the release of the acclaimed collaboration between Djabe (one of Hungary's most acclaimed Jazz groups) and former Genesis guitarist and acclaimed solo artist Steve Hackett; "Life is a Journey: The Sardinia Tapes", an album which was the result of improvised sessions that took place in a church on the island of Sardinia.
