The 1970s were a golden age for dub music, with the decade witnessing its humble beginnings through to it becoming a dominant force on the Jamaican music scene. Throughout this fascinating evolution were a handful of pioneering sound engineers who transformed the style from relatively simple experimentations in sound to awe-inspiring reggae masterpieces, with their pioneering work continuing to inspire and influence music makers the world over, up until the present day. Leading this dub revolution were such seminal figures as King Tubby, Errol Brown, Scientist, Prince Jammy and perennial hitmaker, Errol Thompson, whose work with music impresario Joe Gibbs produced some of the biggest hits of the 1970s and beyond. Much of the latter’s dub output from the decade was featured on seven popular long- players that saw issue in Jamaica on Gibbs’s eponymously titled record label between 1974 and 1979, commencing with the experimental, yet hugely influential, ‘Dub Serial’ and ultimately culminating with the suitably titled ‘Majestic Dub’ from five years later.

An album much in need of an explanation, Prince Flo & Jah Edward I began life as a reggae-lite concept, inspired by the duo's discovery of reggae via the rise of Bob Marley. Like many Americans of the day, the pair was pretty clueless, but unlike most, they had connections. Thus, a record deal was inked with a small Florida independent, and arrangements were made for the two to record at Tuff Gong Studios in Kingston under the aegis of co-producer Errol Brown. Flo & Eddie duly turned up at the studio with a list of Jamaican songs and their own numbers ripe for reggae-fying. Brown tossed it in the trash, and gave the pair a crash course in "real" Jamaican music.

"Down To Earth" is the 4th album by psychedelic soul group The Undisputed Truth. Although "Down To Earth" made a good showing on the R&B Album Charts (#35), it failed to crossover to the Billboard Pop Charts like The Truth's previous LPs had done. The album's lead single, "Help Yourself", was released in early 1974, and the group then appeared on Soul Train to promote it. The song became The Undisputed Truth's biggest hit since 1971's "Smiling Faces Sometimes" (US #3, US R&B #2), making #63 on the Pop Charts and #19 on the R&B Charts (their second and last Top 20 R&B hit). A second single, "I'm A Fool For You", also made #39 on the Soul Charts.

The multidimensional Hot Chocolate incorporated strains of soul, rock, reggae, and disco into their sound and, during the '70s and early '80s, scored a dozen Top 10 hits in their native U.K. Formed by Errol Brown and Tony Wilson, the interracial band debuted in 1969 as Hot Chocolate Band with a cover of Plastic Ono Band's "Give Peace a Chance," issued on the Beatles' Apple Records. The band then forged a long-term alliance with producer Mickie Most and his RAK label, for which Brown and Wilson also wrote material for other artists. From 1970 through 1973, Hot Chocolate released seven singles. "Love Is Life" and "I Believe (In Love)" were Top 10 U.K. hits, as was "Brother Louie," a bleak tale regarding an interracial relationship. A cover version, shrewdly recorded by Stories, went to number one in the U.S.
