Exuberance

Debut album from a Madrid-based band called Exquirla, entitled ‘Para Quienes Aún Viven’ (For Those Still Alive). Exquirla are not exactly a brand new band full of new colleagues and naive exuberance. The exuberance exists but amongst an already established group of musicians. Essentially, Exquirla is the Spanish instrumental post rock band Toundra fronted by a singer. But not just any singer. Instead of a ‘normal’ rock vocalist, Exquirla are fronted by Niño de Elche, a flamenco singer.

Praised as “the soul of the Spanish guitar,” he has become a worldwide sensation known as this generation’s great guitarist. Pablo Sáinz-Villegas has been acclaimed by the international press as the successor of Andrés Segovia and an ambassador of Spanish culture in the world. His “virtuosic playing characterized by irresistible exuberance” (The New York Times) make him one of the most acclaimed soloists by prestigious conductors, orchestras and festivals.

What we started with our compilation 'Heading For The Christmas Ball' (BCD 17611) in 2020, we would like to continue: to provide the festival of love with more exuberance, even though some songs are nostalgic and dreamy and you might even feel transported back to your own childhood. This Christmas disc invites you to the Christmas ball, to dance, to swing, to contemplation and exuberance among family members, friends, peers and guests.

…The performances are fine and the digipack is an elegant presentation. The composer, so highly regarded in his own time, deserves more for his anniversary, but this will suffice for now. More than sufficient, it is a delightful hour and a quarter of music.
