Skerik’s Syncopated Taint Septet follows up the release of their classic 2007 studio album Husky with the perfect companion piece, Live At The Triple Door. Multi-tracked at the venerable Seattle jazz venue, the band winds their way through seven torrid performances, including “Summer Pudding,” “Taming The Shrew” and “The Third Rail.” Adding distinguished flourishes to the Syncopated Taint Septet on this evening is both a string section and the acclaimed Seattle vocalist Om Johari.

Born of a Monterey Jazz Festival commission in 2012, Bill Frisell’s “Big Sur” features an hour of original music, 19 compositions that explicitly reference the coastal-mountain environment known as Big Sur; a region that occupies 90 miles of spectacular central California coastline. Titles such as “A Good Spot”, “Going to California”, “A Beautiful View”, “Big Sur”, and “On the Lookout” evoke the remote and pastoral setting with musical blends of chamber jazz, country, classical, folk, and rock. Joined by violinist Jenny Scheinman, violist Eyvind Kang, cellist Hank Roberts, and drummer Rudy Royston, the group premiered the music at the festival in September 2012. Six months later, the quintet recorded “Big Sur” at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California, with longtime Frisell collaborators Lee Townsend and Adam Muñoz producing and engineering, respectively.

British folkster Nick Drake's gorgeous, melancholy, tantalizingly ambiguous songs have been covered often, but not perhaps with the range of interpretive powers & depth of emotional commitment that these (mostly) Vancouver & Seattle artists bring to bear in re-imagining his music…

After a nine-year hiatus, Bill Frisell's 858 Quartet recorded their second offering. Their elliptical debut, Richter 858, was produced by poet David Breskin (who also helmed the sessions for Nels Cline's Dirty Baby), and accompanied an exhibition by German artist Gerhard Richter. The music on Sign of Life: Music for 858 Quartet was loosely composed by Frisell, and took shape in group rehearsals. 858's other members include violinist Jenny Scheinman, violist Eyvind Kang, and cellist Hank Roberts. Recorded at Fantasy Studios in San Francisco and produced by Lee Townsend, the 17 selections on this set feel very organic. The album opens with Americana-tinged themes in the two-part "It's a Long Story" that nod to country, folk, and even Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready" in its melody.

This album of mostly short vignettes was recorded with his 858 Quartet, which was originally convened for an excellent album of musical art interpretation. Without the visual stimuli, the group, consisting of Bill Frisell on guitar, Jenny Scheinman on violin, Eyvind Kang on viola; and Hank Roberts on cello, move into the realm of atmospheric set pieces, amounting to something like an Americana chamber quartet.

A sad melancholia that also strangely exudes hopefulness are the juxtaposing emotions expressed by pianist Wayne Horvitz and his Four Plus One Ensemble on this, their second release collectively. The music, composed by Horvitz while spending two months in central Italy, is quite neo-classical and modern chamber in stance and style, but also borrows on film noir, improvised jazz and third stream, electronica and rock musics.
