The bassoon is a woodwind instrument in the double reed family that plays music written in the bass and tenor clefs, and occasionally the treble. Appearing in its modern form in the 19th century, the bassoon figures prominently in orchestral, concert band, and chamber music literature. It is known for its distinctive tone colour, wide range, variety of character, and agility. The modern bassoon exists in two forms; Buffet (or French) and Heckel (or German) systems. One who plays a bassoon of either system is called a bassoonist.

Voor luitist (en dirigent) Ivano Zaneghi was er maar één die qua roem en vaardigheden de vergelijking met Vivaldi kon doorstaan, en dat was Baldassare Galuppi (1706-1785). De verfijning in muzikale expressie en de elegante stijl van zijn wereldlijke en geestelijke composities zijn inderdaad opmerkelijk. Sommige van de stukken op deze cd bleven ongepubliceerd. De cantate 'La scusa', vermoedelijk uit de jaren 1770, is bewaard in een manuscript in de Venetiaanse Marciana bibliotheek.

Nine delightful Renaissance dances by Tielman Susato start this program with a bang. “The Impossible Symphony “Shows once again how limitless Arturo Márquez’s musical imagination is,” says Alondra de la Parra. “The way he addresses the big questions of our time here is absolutely stunning in its scope and quality. Taking the fifth movement, ‘Magicicada’, as an example, Márquez is inspired by the empathy shown by two species of cicadas that tune into each other’s life cycles to allow both species to thrive. He represents these two cicadas in the score with flute and double bass as they cohabit around each other until their lines meet on D, the only note they have in common. Gender equality is the inspiration of the third movement, reminding us of the additional struggles that society imposes on women in their daily lives. This is represented by two cellos, male and female, playing in canon, but the conditions are more difficult for the woman, since her part is octaved.
