"Although the U.S.S.R.'s system of identifying and training musically talented youngsters produced amazingly precocious pianists on a regular basis, Evgeny Kissin stood out from the rest for a talent far surpassing that of the usual Wunderkind. He has become, seemingly without difficulty, one of the finest adult pianists on the world's concert stages…"

Schubert had been dead for seven years when, in 1838, the 27-year-old Liszt returned to Vienna for the first time since his childhood, when he had been taken to see Beethoven by his teacher Czerny an, perhaps apocryphally, been blessed by a kiss from the old man.

Classical | Label: harmonia mundi, Official Digital Download

For its very first disc with harmonia mundi, the duo formed by Pavel Kolesnikov and Samson Tsoy offers us three closely related works: Schubert’s celebrated Fantasy, his Divertissement à la hongroise, full of contrasts between bursts of energy and enigmatic mists, and Leonid Desyatnikov’s Trompe-l’œil, written specifically ‘to echo’ the Fantasy. An intriguing hall of mirrors.

Compiled from two distinct recording sessions, 2010 and 2014, this rather anomalous pairing of Schumann and Mussorgsky by British virtuoso Paul Lewis offers some exquisite sonorities in the course of his traversal of two monuments of the Romantic repertory.
Sergio Vartolo - Girolamo Frescobaldi - Keyboard Music: Fantasie, Book 1; Ricercari; Canzoni Francesi (2002) 2CDs

Sergio Vartolo - Girolamo Frescobaldi: Keyboard Music (2002) 2CDs

Classical, Baroque | Label: Naxos | # 8.553547-48 | Time: 02:12:00

This is a significant recording for several reasons. Sergio Vartolo has now recorded all of Frescobaldi’s keyboard music (the other issues were on the Tactus label). The Fantasie (1608) and Ricercari (1615) are the earliest of Frescobaldi’s keyboard publications (the latter being issued in the same year as the more famous first book of Toccatas), and as far as I’m aware neither had been issued complete before; so to get both together, and at super-budget price, is treasure-trove indeed. Frescobaldi fanatics need read no further. (Gramophone)

It all began with a fascinating find in the well-known antiquarian music shop Schlohlein in Basel, where Miriam Terragni came across a substantial but previously neglected Romantic flute sonata, an era which offers a fairly slim repertoire for flute soloists.

Label:Audite - Date:2013

For many, Ernst Krenek, who spanned almost all of the last century, living from 1900 to 1991, is more of a neglected name than a composer to whom they turn for profound, stimulating and beautiful music……..Here is exciting and technically brilliant playing on a new CD that both helps to illustrate Krenek's place in the pantheon. It draws the listener in; it invites them to look more deeply……………
