On this recording, Paul Lewis performs two major works of the keyboard repertoire. Decidedly programmatic, Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition is more commonly heard today in Ravel's orchestral version. However, the original for solo piano is both a technical tour-de-force and a brilliant example of the composer's coloristic gifts. The pairing is Schumann's Fantaisie Op.17, a work whose movements originally had evocative titles (Ruin, Triumphal Arch, Constellation). The 'program' was removed before publication, but the 'pictures' Schumann intended listeners to imagine remain.

This is the fifth and final volume in the Ligia series of the complete keyboard music of Girolamo Frescobaldi (1583–1643). Previous volumes reviewed in Fanfare include the Primo libro di capricci and Secondo libro di toccate (both 34:2), and the Primo libro di toccate (34:6). The present volume includes published collections from the beginning, middle, and end of Frescobaldi’s career. The Primo libro delle fantasie was published while the composer was still in Milan; it served as a kind of audition piece that eventually won him the position of organist at St. Peter’s in Rome.

'I have composed a big sonata and variations for four hands, and the latter have met with a specially good reception here, but I do not entirely trust Hungarian taste, and I shall leave it to you and to the Viennese to decide their true merit' So wrote Franz Schubert in 1824, evoking the popular 19th-century genre for 4-hands piano that publishers were always pestering him to write for. In his brief life Schubert devoted 32 compositions to this form and the least of these pieces, be it a ländler, polonaise or march, radiates with all of his finesse and sensitivity.

Internationally renowned and award-winning pianist Hyewon Chang makes her Navona Records debut on FANTASIE REFLECTIONS, a carefully crafted collection of fantasias from Mozart and Schumann effortlessly brought to peak form. Chang’s fluent attention to temperance in Mozart’s Fantasia in C Minor (K. 396) captures improvisational elements and collaborative effect in Maximilian Stadler’s completion of the 1782 composition. So too does Chang treat the wide range of captivating themes nestled in the folds of Fantasia in D Minor (K. 397) with equal musicality and assurance; the same for Fantasia in C Minor (K. 475), a pinnacle of Mozart’s repertoire given new breath in an unwaveringly grand iteration. Rounded out with Schumann’s Fantasie in C Major, a staggering journey into the innermost impassions, dedications, and toils of the composer himself, FANTASIE REFLECTIONS comes as a masterful recording to be long-lauded by dedicatees of Mozart and Schumann alike.

Schumann's F-sharp Minor Sonata is a hard nut to crack, but the young Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes does better than most. He pounces upon the quirky rhythmic ambiguities, clarifying and varying knotty textures with felicitous voicings. His detailing, however, never becomes fussy or discontiguous. The thickest chords resonate more tellingly than in the streamlined Pollini and Perahia recordings. Andsnes plunges into the Fantasy's murky waters, savoring but never dwindling over every harmonic and contrapuntal nicety.

"I have composed a big sonata and variations for four hands, and the latter have met with a specially good reception here, but I do not entirely trust Hungarian taste, and I shall leave it to you and to the Viennese to decide their true merit" So wrote Franz Schubert in 1824, evoking the popular 19th-century genre for 4-hands piano that publishers were always pestering him to write for. In his brief life Schubert devoted 32 compositions to this form and the least of these pieces, be it a ländler, polonaise or march, radiates with all of his finesse and sensitivity. Three are incontestable masterpieces, in the same rank as his sonatas or quartets: the Variations D813, the Fantasie D 940 and the Rondo D 951. All three date from the composer's final years, a period that gave birth to his most accomplished works.
