A man is charged with murder. He is Pigoil, the aging stage manager at Chansonia, a music hall in a Paris faubourg. His confession is a long flashback to New Year's Eve, 1935, when he discovers his wife is unfaithful and Galapiat, the local mobster, closes the music hall. Over the next few months, Pigoil loses custody of his beloved son, Jo-Jo, and must find work. Pigoil and his pals take over the Chansonia as a co-op; Galapiat is momentarily benign. Their star is the young Douce, a girl from near Lille for whom Galapiat lusts. She in turn falls in love with Milou, a local Red. There are ups and downs, but mostly ups - but what about Jo-Jo and what about the murder?

1949. Clément Mathieu, professeur de musique sans emploi, accepte un poste de surveillant dans un pensionnat de rééducation pour élèves difficiles. Il est accueilli par l'homme à tout faire des lieux, le père Maxence, victime sous ses yeux d'une mauvaise blague d'un élève. Ce qui vaut à Clément d'avoir un aperçu immédiat des méthodes répressives appliquées par le directeur, Rachin. Malgré l'antipathie de ce dernier à son égard et les écarts répétés de quelques fortes têtes, le brave pion s'obstine à se rapprocher des enfants en cherchant une autre voie que la sanction. Compositeur frustré, il a alors l'idée de ressortir ses partitions pour les initier au chant…

One night, the celebrated orchestra conductor Pierre Morhange receives an unexpected visit from Pépinot, someone he has not seen since his days in a grim boarding school during the late 1940s. Pépinot brings with him the diary of Clément Mathieu, the reluctant teacher who succeeded in changing both their lives. As they read the diary, both men are transported back to 1949, to the day when Clément arrived at the school, an establishment which was run with an iron fist by a despotic headmaster and where the pupils ran riot. The new teacher is dismayed by the animosity and brutality that surrounds him. But then he sees an opportunity to make a change for the better – by introducing his class of miserable rebels to the beauty of choral music…

Sarah a accepté la demande en mariage de son compagnon, mais est terrifiée à l'idée de passer à l'acte. Pour comble de malheur, sa soeur Annie s'apprête à convoler avec un tennisman, obligeant du même coup Sarah à passer un week-end dans ce faubourg ultra-chic de Pasadena qu'elle déteste… et à affronter une famille dont elle se considère comme le mouton noir.Seule consolation : revoir son alerte grand-mère Katharine, dont les rosseries, l'humour gaulois et les "conseils" tordus l'enchantent. Et cette année, Mamie a quelque chose à lui apprendre. La rumeur court en effet que Katharine et la défunte mère de Sarah auraient été les modèles de Mrs. Robinson et sa fille et rivale Elaine dans le roman et le film Le Lauréat. Du coup, Sarah commence à s'interroger sur sa propre identité…
