F for Faure… F for Fouchenneret! The music of Gabriel Faure has been a constant presence with pianist Theo Fouchenneret since childhood, and it's language comes naturally to him. His first Faure album is an invitation to journey through the refined, dreamlike world of the Nocturnes, from the seductive suavity of the first to the sombre purity of the last. An odyssey in thirteen poetic phases into the depths of Faure, into the heart of an inner self, the strongly guarded fortress of this unique, intimate music, free of all external influence, whose unsettling, unutterable beauty Theo Fouchenneret reveals to us.

Simon Zaoui, Pierre Fouchenneret and Raphael Merlin here resume, and complete, their exploration of the chamber works of Gabriel Fauré:, begun in 2018 with the first volume of Horizons. Far from the prevailing trends of the early 20th century, Fauré's music for piano and strings testifies to the singularity of his language, constantly moving between past and future. Joined by violist Marie Chilemme for the two piano quartets, and by members of the Strada Quartet for the string quartet and quintets, the three friends present a carefully considered version of these masterpieces, recorded here for the first time using the material of the new Barenreiter edition.

Gabriel Fauré is best known for his Requiem and Pavane, but these are not typical of an output that focused largely on solo piano pieces, songs and chamber music, many of which were orchestrated by others. His Violin Concerto was never completed but the surviving first movement reveals Fauré’s characteristic playfulness with rhythm and harmony. The short prelude to Pénélope, Fauré’s only opera, conveys the sombre and passionate moods of its heroine, heard here alongside favourites such as the poignant Élégie, the beloved Dolly and, famous among flautists, the distinguished Fantaisie.

Designed as an immersion in Gabriel Fauré's chamber music, the double album recorded by the pianist Simon Zaoui with Pierre Fouchenneret on the violin, Raphaël Merlin on the cello and the tenor David Lefort, unlocks the secrets of Fauré’s late style. In spite of their quasi hermetic density, the French composer's scores still retain the charm of his youthful works where his melodic genius was more direct.
