This bonus DVD makes this collection particularly special: The documentary "Film noir: Bringing darkness to light," completed in 2006 and produced and directed by Gary Leva, is far superior to any of the film-noir documentaries available on public-domain collections of film noir for several reasons: (1) At 68 min., the subject is treated in depth. (2) The B&W clips from films as well as the interviews in color and color film posters are of excellent quality. (3) The clips, some from rarely seen films, are precise selections, unlike the fuzzy, often lengthy trailers included in previous noir documentaries.

Femmes fatales, shady alleyways, betrayal and murder. A documentary about the classic, black and white detective movies produced in Hollywood in the 1940s and 50s, and which belong to the filmgenre of film noir. Who else would be better suited to talk about the underbelly of the city than James Ellroy. As Los Angeles inspired most of the film noir it is through this city that the story of the genre will be told. Alain Silver, author of LA Noir, and Eddie Muller, author and President of the Film Noir Foundation in LA will also contribute their findings. Clips of the most important film noir titles will round off a re-appraisal of the popular genre.

Director Orson WELLES

Cast Edward G. Robinson, Orson Welles, Loretta Young, Philip Merivale, Richard Long

That this 1946 noir was the only Orson Welles film to show profit on release and that it was the director’s least favourite picture might suggest an absence of his signature talent. But while Welles had been pressured into making a more conventional (ie commercial) film after what RKO Radio Pictures saw as his disastrous second film, the studio butchered but still brilliant The Magnificent Ambersons, the auteur nevertheless managed to turn in a terrific cat-and-mouse thriller that’s full of recognisably Wellesian touches (notably the climax set in a church clocktower). The great man himself plays a German war criminal hiding out in a small Connecticut town, where he poses as a teacher and is engaged to lovely Loretta Young. Hot on his tail, however, is Nazi hunter Edward G Robinson. That casting was forced on Welles (who wanted his regular player Agnes Moorhead), but it works splendidly anyway.

This is one of the best parodies of the '40s hardboiled detective genre, with a very clever conceit: weaving the plot and production design around memorable movie clips (The Killers, The Big Sleep, Double Indemnity, The Lost Weekend, White Heat, This Gun for Hire, Sorry, Wrong Number, Notorious). Steve Martin plays the cool Rigby Reardon, who tries solving an incomprehensible mystery with the assistance of Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney, Burt Lancaster, Fred MacMurray, Ingrid Bergman, and Ray Milland, among others. It's all silly hokum with Rachel Ward as the pretty moll and director-cowriter Carl Reiner as the nefarious villain. Miklos Rozsa takes us back to yesteryear with his lush score, and, fittingly, Edith Head handles the period costumes in her final production.

George becomes involved with a singer, Christy (Nancy Guild) and is chased by mobsters while on a search for the stolen money. Robert ALDRICH

Cast Ralph Meeker, Albert Dekker, Paul Stewart, Juano Hernandez, Wesley Addy, Marian Carr, Maxine Cooper, Cloris Leachman, Gaby Rogers, Jack Elam

Ralph Meeker plays Mike Hammer, a tough Los Angeles private eye who is just slightly less brutal and corrupt than the crooks he chases. One evening, Hammer gives a ride to Christina (Cloris Leachman), an attractive hitchhiker on a lonely country road, who has escaped from the nearby lunatic asylum. Thugs waylay them and force his car to crash. When Hammer returns to semi-consciousness, he hears Christina being tortured until she dies. Hammer, both for vengeance and in hopes that "something big" is behind it all, decides to pursue the case.
