Gothic post-punks Theatre of Hate formed in Britain in 1980; led by singer/songwriter Kirk Brandon, formerly of the Pack, the original group also comprised guitarist Simon Werner, bassist Jonathan Werner and drummer Jim Walker. Immediately recognized as one of the era's premier live acts, Theatre of Hate debuted in 1981 with the concert LP He Who Dares Wins Live at the Warehouse Leeds; soon after, Brandon dismissed the remainder of the group, assembling a new line-up comprising guitarist Billy Duffy, bassist Stan Stammers, saxophonist John Lennard and drummer Nigel Preston (who was soon after replaced by Luke Rendle).

Rabies is a solid, sordid album from Skinny Puppy, even if it isn't always the sound of the band operating at their peak. All of the trademark Skinny Puppy elements are in place: Nivek Ogre's snarling vocals, snippets of dialogue from sci-fi and horror movies, and symphonic, chugging synth sounds. At least four of the album's 11 tracks are perfect examples of Skinny Puppy's sonic attack.

One of the more elaborate entries in the sporadic Back and Forth archival series, Brap is a double-disc effort covering the beginning and end of Skinny Puppy's functional career as such. It's very obviously for the hardcore fan but the quality of much of the album is such that it's worth hearing as an example of the band's undoubted influence on electronic music.

It's not a compilation of across-the-board greatest songs, but the Skinny Puppy singles collection does the old 12" Anthology one better by including tracks from the group's three Nettwerk albums of the 1990s (Rabies, Too Dark Park, and Last Rights). For fans, it's long been a dream to have the full fruits of the industrial kingpins' long career all on one disc – "Dig It," one of Skinny Puppy's first and best singles, appears right beside "Worlock," from 1989's Rabies.

Skinny Puppy reunited for a one-off reunion concert in 2000, five years after the release of The Process, the death of keyboardist Dwayne Goettel, and the breakup of the band. The question of whether founding members Ogre and Cevin Key could pull off the Skinny Puppy live experience without Goettel is answered on Doomsday, a record of their concert at the Doomsday Festival in Dresden, Germany.

Symphonic Prog

Japanese Symphonic scene is pretty fertile but not in the classic style we are used to, instead they have a more eclectic approach that blends our beloved sub-genre with Fusion and Neo Prog influences, it's very common to find female vocalist as in two of their most representative bands like TERU'S SYMPHONIA and MAGDALENA, both leaded by the fabulous Megumi Tokuhisa, the perfect balance between the operatic sound of Annie Haslam and the beautiful but less elaborate vocals of Kate Bush…
