To celebrate this important anniversary, London Records revisit the album across a series of formats, uncovering sonic archival gems, new mixes and more. 2CD - The Age of Consent plus 5 newly commissioned 2024 remixes. Hundreds and Thousands and 5 bonus tracks. Remixes from Absolute., Planningtorock, The Knocks, Dave Audé vs Tall Paul, and Superchumbo. To say The Age of Consent is a great album of dance-oriented synth-pop music is to sell it extremely short; this is simply a great album, period…

17 track Best Of from the lead singer of Bronski Beat and the Communards. Both of those groups are represented here as well as some of Jimmy's solo songs. Jimmy's distinctive falsetto voice could not be mistaken for any other. Bronski Beat had six UK hits but only the first four are included here. The four that made it are 'Small Town Boy', an unlikely medley (with Marc Almond) of Donna Summer's 'I Feel Love', 'Johnny Remember Me', 'Why' and 'It Ain't Necessarily So'. The Communards had a UK #1 hit with 'Don't Leave Me This Way'. Other hits included here include 'Never Can Say Goodbye', 'So Cold The Night', 'You Are My World', 'Disenchanted', 'Tomorrow', 'For A Friend' and 'There's More To Love'. Jimmy had five UK hits without either group, the biggest of which was 'You Make Me Feel Mighty Real'. A cover of 'To Love Somebody' (Bee Gees) made the UK Top Ten. 'Comment Te Dire Adieu', 'Read My Lips' and 'Run From Love' round out this collection. Despite the omission of one major UK hit and one minor hit, this is an excellent collection of music by one of the best British pop singers of the '80s.

Scottish-born singer Jimmy Somerville became a surprise success in the mid-'80s. Instead of being Duran Duran-cute, Jimmy Somerville looked like the average boy next door. Instead of belting out his musical repertoire with a self-conscious urgency to prove himself as a singer (like Rick Astley or George Michael), Somerville possessed a dramatic, piercing falsetto that made the Associates' Billy Mackenzie sound like Tom Waits. But what really made Jimmy Somerville distinctive was his openness about his sexuality. The 1980s was the decade of androgyny, with artists like Annie Lennox, Boy George, and Poison emulating the gender-bending approach of 1970s-era David Bowie. Other performers such as Morrissey and the aforementioned George Michael kept their fans guessing about their sexual orientation.

Foster and Bronski Beat teamed up again in 1994, and released a techno "Tell Me Why '94" and an acoustic "Smalltown Boy '94" on the German record label, ZYX Music. The album Rainbow Nation was released the following year with Hellyer returning as lead vocalist, as Foster had dropped out of the project. Bronski Beat then dissolved with Steve Bronski going on to become a producer for other artists. Larry Steinbachek became the musical director for Michael Laub's theatre company, 'Remote Control Productions'.

Smalltown Boy was the first time anyone heard the voice of Jimmy Somerville; the voice of an angel. When Jimmy Somerville first appeared on TV nobody could believe the voice came from this tough, little, feisty Glaswegian who was always punching above his weight. Making the message as important as the music was Jimmy's aim, yet fame was a burden that he's still trying to unload; but he succeeded in three careers: as lead singer with Bronski Beat, then with The Communards, and up to the present time as a solo artist. This compilation charts Jimmy's music from agit prop to songs of love lost and found to raging, horny disco.
