Fireball Xl5

Fireball XL5 was set in 2062 and followed the exploits of the eponymous spaceship commanded by Colonel Steve Zodiac of the World Space Patrol. It was produced, like most other Anderson productions, in Supermarionation, using puppetry techniques that captured the imagination of a generation.The album features 24 tracks from 16 episodes, including the Fireball XL5 main theme and single version. In the opening theme, Barry Gray employs, for the first time, the Ondes Martenot, bringing an eerie and other-worldly sound to the series. The contrast of detached electronic music with the Jazzy musical language served as a perfect juxtaposition of the alien and human Worlds. Each episode would finish with the pop song "Fireball", bringing the viewer back to the warmth of their 60s lounge. The song was performed by Don Spencer, and was a minor hit in the UK, spending 12 weeks in the UK charts and peaking at number 32.

Perhaps the one thing which binds this remarkable canon of work together is an incredible tapestry of music which enriches each series and instalment. Despite all the impressive techniques and technical wizardry employed by Derek Meddings and his special effects crew, Stingray’s launch wouldn't have half the impact if robbed of Barry Gray’s sweeping crescendo. Similarly, the ponderous ache of the Alphans plight and a police cruiser chase in Demeter City are brought to life by their respective musical accompaniments. The Stand By For Action! concert in April 2022 was a celebration of this incredible body of music which helped to bring life to some of the most popular television series ever made. This sensational show transported fans through over 60 years of the Gerry Anderson back catalogue, paying homage to his special partnership with composers including Barry Gray, Richard Harvey and Crispin Merrell.

This double-CD set contains 60 television themes, at least a dozen of which will be familiar to many over the age of 40 or so – The Avengers, The Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons, Dr. Who, Fireball XL5, The Saint, The Champions and The Naked City are just a few of those programs whose title themes are featured here. There are a few drawbacks, however – for starters, Sequel is a British label, its orientation is British television, and it is drawing the contents of these two CDs almost entirely from the vaults of the British Pye label, so there are at least 40 programs here that never (or barely) aired in the United States.

This Is…Cult Fiction Royale collects 47 original television and film themes from the '60s and '70s like "Theme from Space 1999," "Theme from the Man from U.N.C.L.E.," "Theme from Dirty Harry" and "Theme from Get Carter." Much of it is from the source material (directly from the films and shows themselves), while others are from the original masters. Many of these tracks are available elsewhere, but there are enough obscurities to entice collectors of the genre. Important notice! Following the success of Thunderbirds, Gerry and Sylvia Anderson had proved they had hit upon a winning formula to wow audiences - their mixture of inventive special effects and puppetry. Supermarionation. First screened in 1967, Captain Scarlet And The Mysterons, was written as a more mature series, set against an ongoing war with a forboding unseen nemesis. Taking his lead from the series premise, Captain Scarlet inspired composer Barry Gray to explore an equally mature musical palette to what he had utilised for previous Supermarionation series. With subtle string arrangements replacing the bombast of Thunderbirds' urgency, the original music composed for Scarlet was suitably more atmospheric and at times more sober than its predecessors. The alien nature of the Mysterons themselves saw Gray return to the experimental electronic work he had composed for Fireball XL5 to create something suitably other worldly.
