Three of these marvellous quartets for flute and string trio were composed in 1777/78 during Mozart’s first extended tour without his father. The three quartets K. 285, 285a, 285b are undoubtedly among the most outstanding works in the genre. They share a lightsome, carefree quality with the typical shades of melancholy in the slow movements.

The concept behind Forbidden Flute is to present the flutes in a variety of musical settings: solo, duo, trio, trio plus percussion and quartet. Many modern flute techniques are used to create melodic and harmonic effects. All the sounds that are heard on these performances are produced naturally - no electronic effects have been added. I was very fortunate to be accompanied on this cd by outstanding musicians who are among the very best on the European jazz scene.

The flute, one of the most versatile instruments of all, is the focus of the new GENUIN CD by Japanese flutist Atsuko Koga. The winner of international competitions presents a distinctive mixture of original compositions and arrangements together with cellist Georgiy Lomakov that range from Telemann and Beethoven to Villa-Lobos and world premiere recordings by Minako Tokuyama. Whether it is birdsong, soulful cantilenas, virtuoso passagework, or noisy musical magic, the choice of works and the clear, vibrant interpretations of the two artists demonstrate the flute's and cello's many facets.

For her second recording on Linn, the in-demand concerto soloist performs a selection of 20th century concertos plus Debussy’s Syrinx and Frank Martin’s Ballade. The Flute Concerto by American composer Christopher Rouse is among his most successful and widely performed works since its debut in 1994. Rouse’s concerto calls for astonishing pyrotechnics for both the flute and the orchestra; Katherine is able to showcase the sheer quality of her technique and her playing.

After the violence and destruction of the First World War, a new musical aesthetic developed in Paris. Following the publication of Jean Cocteau’s famous pamphlet Le Coq et l’Arlequin, Impressionist influences were denigrated and instead simplicity in expression was promoted. This album of flute music charts this new ‘Harlequin’ direction, from old school adherent Pierre de Bréville to foreign musicians such as Tansman and Antheil who flocked to the city. Foremost among the exponents are members of the famous Groupe des Six whose innovations challenged and changed French wind music forever.
