I first started tying flies in 1955. My information came from a book published by the old retailer Herter . I bought my materials from them and I recall receiving loose hackle packaged in a brown paper lunch bag. It took me longer to find the right hackle than to tie a fly. I was hooked on tying when I caught an eight-pound rainbow on my very first fly. It was a Mickey fin tied with feathers instead of hair.

Join Skip at his tying bench as he ties five flies, step-by-step… Skip takes you into his tying room and explains tools, hooks, terminology, and teaches you to tie several excellent flies (the Woolly Bugger, Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear, Adams, Elk Hair Caddis, Rick's Caddis, and hair-wing/hair-tail dry flies). Why these particular flies? For two very important reasons… Skip chose these particular flies because these flies have been around a long time, they're proven and deadly, and by tying them you learn basic tying techniques that are the basis of tying flies in general.
