Although little Sandy Denny material was released prior to her first album as part of Fairport Convention (1969's What We Did on Our Holidays), quite a few pre-Fairport recordings of the singer's survive, though they usually weren't made in the most technically sophisticated settings. This CD, recorded in the Glasgow home of folk singer Alex Campbell on August 5, 1967, was salvaged from a cassette and issued in 2011, when interest in Denny's work had escalated to a point where even documents of rather lo-fi quality held enough interest to merit a commercial release. This is clearly a recording for serious Denny fans because of those technical limitations; even some of the other home recordings from the time that have found both official and bootleg release boast superior sound.

While the last decades of the twentieth century saw a revival of the genre, the twenty-first century has brought not only continued relevance, but a new appreciation for English folk music. An ever-growing audience embraces the brilliant, fresh crop of musicians, who enrich the tradition with novel takes on old songs and new tunes. This album features the super talented singer-songwriter Eliza Carthy, who duets with her mom, the legendary Norma Waterson, both Mercury Award nominees. Multi-instrumentalist Pete Coe has been one of the most consistently excellent traditional musicians and songwriters to remain inspired since the 1970s. Ian King came from outside the folk scene with radical reworkings of traditional English songs made with the help of reggae producer Adrian Sherwood and Little Axe guitarist Skip McDonald. Glastonbury-born Emily Portman quickly distinguished herself in the trio Devil’s Interval before flattening everybody with her extraordinary songs dealing with the weird and dark side of folklore.

Many of my old folk LPs (and LPs in general) have been displaced, or scratched beyond recognition. Alternatively, if you sold most of your vinyl during the onset of the late 80s, Compact Disc craze then this 3-CD set should signify a welcome event. This offering features a comprehensive overview to coincide with “Vanguard Records” capitalization of folk music’s increasing popularity commencing back in 1950. Naturally, these selections are culled from the now historical “Vanguard Records” archives. The three CDs are divided into distinct folk based genres: Roots of Folks (CD-1), Singers & Songwriters (CD-2), and Folk Blues (CD-3). You will hear Cisco Houston’s patriotic classic, “This Land Is Your Land,” and Doc Watson’s “Tom Dooley.” Vietnam protest singers such as Phil Ochs and the inimitable Northern California band, “Country Joe & The Fish are featured as well. Essentially, this three-pack is awash with one masterwork after another. The producers also include an informative timeline style glimpse of the progression and outgrowths of folk.
This wonderfully appealing product conjures up memories of both the good and bad while also serving as a testament to America’s beauty and wherewithal. More importantly – we are treated to a series of topical statements from many of this genre’s most prolific raconteurs. Highly recommended.

Fast Folk Musical Magazine helped jumpstart the careers of musicians such as Shawn Colvin, Steve Forbert, John Gorka, Lucy Kaplansky, Christine Lavin, Richard Shindell, Suzanne Vega, and many others. This double CD set comprises honest, intimate versions of their songs, available in retail stores for the first time! Guided by the venerable Dave Van Ronk, singer-songwriter Jack Hardy formed Fast Folk in 1982 in New York City. The dominant theme in the 100-plus Fast Folk Musical Magazine issues was an emphasis on the song rather than the singer—music for its own sake. It quickly became an important showcase for the new folk scene, which continued to flourish for nearly twenty years. By drawing on both the new wave and the old guard of American folk music, Fast Folk developed into a significant chapter in the history of folk music. Compiled and annotated by Richard Meyer, Jack Hardy and Jeff Place.

In 2001 the U.K.-based Westside reissue label began releasing CD two-fers featuring '50s and '60s folk crooner Jimmie F. Rodgers. His albums for Roulette Records had been out of print for well over three decades. Rather than reissuing the discs chronologically, however, Westside chose a thematic approach. For some artists, such could easily be considered historic hara-kiri. However, this is not the case with Rodgers – as this initial installment amply demonstrates.

STUNNING ALL ACOUSTIC BROADCAST FROM RY COODER AT CAMBRIDGE IN 1979 Bop Till You Drop, Ry Cooder's eighth album, was released in July 1979 and remains the first digitally recorded major-label album in popular music, recorded as it was on a digital 32-track machine built by 3M. The album consists almost entirely of covers of earlier rhythm and blues and rock and roll classics, including Elvis Presley's Little Sister and the 1965 Fontella Bass-Bobby McClure hit Don't Mess Up a Good Thing , on which Cooder duetted with soul star Chaka Khan. Khan also performed on the only original track on the album, Down in Hollywood.
