Frank Gambale Acoustic Improvisation

This DVD follows the success of his 1st acoustic trio recording Natural High. This video features his trio Natural High Live with Otmaro Ruiz and Alain Caron. After blowing through 7 performances with his band Frank sits down for a candid one-on-one session about jazz improvisation. Using the changes to All the Things You Are as a foundation Frank teaches a series of ideas for improvising over classic ii-V progressions using 3rds and 7ths chord extensions Phrygian super Locrian and diminished ideas. Franks incorporates rhythmic and melodic motifs and much much more.

Since the break-up of Canadian fusion group UZEB in the early 1990s, the only member to continue evolving in the direction set by the group has been bassist Alain Caron. Outside of his short-lived horn and percussion-centric Wild Unit, guitarist Michel Cusson has chosen to work in the area of television and film scoring, while drummer Paul Brochu has turned to more acoustic work with artists including saxophonist Jean-Pierre Zanella. Caron spent some time in New York, recording/performing with guitarist Leni Stern and touring occasionally with her husband Mike (with whom he still works a few times a year). He also was part of fusion guitarist Frank Gambale's uncharacteristically all-acoustic project Natural High (Wombat, 2006).

Chick Corea's greatest trio or small ensemble very likely is this one, with bassist Miroslav Vitous and drummer Roy Haynes.Their virtuoso level of musicianship and acute listening skills are translated into stellar recordings over two nights of performances in Willisau and Reutlinger, edited and condensed on this single CD. Where any outtakes are hiding might provide a further revelation, but as it stands, this release is a high-water mark for these brilliant musicians. Corea's strengths lie not only in his witty, effervescent playing, but in his compositions that showcase his mischievous personality.

Never say never. Twenty-five years after breaking up, the legendary Canadian jazz-fusion band Uzeb has unexpectedly reunited for a 2017 tour. In summer 2016, drummer Paul Brochu, bassist Alain Caron and guitarist Michel Cusson rekindled their creative chemistry for the first time since disbanding in 1992.
