The album was named as part of a 2011 lawsuit by Gail Zappa towards Rykodisc, claiming the label released several vault masters without the permission of the Zappa Family Trust on this and other releases, specifically the single edits of some songs, such as the 12" disco Remix of "Dancin' Fool".

Unique material: A different edit of "Dickie's Such an Asshole", and a different recording of the last part of "Cosmik Debris". When the Stage series took off, Zappa made an album with sample songs, which looked just like Volume 1, but it said "SAMPLER" instead of "VOLUME 1" on the cover. Frank Zappa designed his six-volume series of live albums You Can't Do That on Stage Anymore with the CD in mind; each volume was a two-CD set, and each disc ran an hour or so. But the CD was still an emerging format in the late '80s, so he also compiled this 81-minute sampler, released only on cassette and as a double-LP set, concurrently with the first volume in 1988. It gives a good sense of the series as a whole.

Aapostrophe (‘) Turns 50!
Arguably the most popular album in the Frank Zappa catalog, apostrophe (‘) has consistently been a best-seller. It was Zappa’s first Gold Record Award in the U.S., peaking at #10 on the Billboard 200 chart. The “Don’t Eat The Yellow Snow” single also made the Billboard Top 100 Hits chart, peaking at #87. The success of Apostrophe(‘) brought along a new awareness for Zappa and through the years, the album has been a go-to for most when discovering his music.
For the 50th Anniversary, Zappa Records and UMe have compiled a 5-CD + Blu-ray Audio set featuring the original album newly remastered by Bernie Grundman, session outtakes from the Vault and two bonus concerts spanning the year of 1974. The Blu-ray contains the new remaster in hi-res formats, brand-new Dolby Atmos remixes by Karma Auger and Erich Gobel and FZ’s 1974 Quadraphonic mix, back in print for the first time in 50 years. The package features new historical essays by Simon Prentis & Vaultmeister Joe Travers, along with never-before-seen images from the archive of Sam Emerson, who shot the now iconic front cover photo."

Los Angeles – August 14, 2020 - By 1981, Frank Zappa’s Halloween shows in New York were already legendary – a rock and roll bacchanalia of jaw-dropping musicianship, costume-clad revelry, spontaneous theatrical hijinks and of course a heavy dose of Zappa’s signature virtuosic guitar workouts.

The soundtrack to Frank Zappa's strange early-'70s film 200 Motels was always doomed to be a peripheral entry in his discography. The movie's story was not easy to follow, and neither is the record (not that plot was ever a big focus of the production). It's typically wacky Zappa of the era, with unpredictable sharp turns between crunchy rock bombast, orchestration, and jazz/classical influences, as well as interjections of wacky spoken dialogue. Those who like his late-'60s/early-'70s work – not as song-oriented as his first albums, in other words, but not as "serious" or as silly as his later records – will probably like this fine, although it's not up to the level of Uncle Meat.
