Fazil Say is one of the world's most prominent pianists but he is also a much-admired composer with a substantial catalogue of works. He combines both these accomplishments in his two Violin Sonatas, the first of which is suffused with Turkish motifs and dances, such as the horon. The second sonata takes as its theme the abuse of nature and the need to resist despoliation. His Violin Concerto is subtitled 1001 Nights in the Harem and is full of rich melodies and atmosphere, and features an array of Turkish percussion instruments.

The image of Wilhelm Friedemann Bach (1710– 84) most widely prevalent in our time is that of an eldest son as it were haunted by the memory of his father but who, nevertheless, crippled by gambling and drinking debts, was obliged to sell his share of the precious inheritance constituted by Johann Sebastian’s manuscripts. Yet he was also one of the first composers to carve out a ‘freelance’ existence, like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart some years after him.

The instrument he wrote for with the second greatest frequency is the bassoon (!), for which he created about forty concertos. Two of the most celebrated bookend Václav Vonášek’s debut recording and are supplemented by pieces by other 18th-century masters, J. S. Bach, C. P. E. Bach and G. F. Handel.
