Alexander Portnoy’s parents are the stereotypical Jewish couple, always complaining and obsessing about their lives and their children. His overbearing mother (Lee Grant) and his perennially constipated father (Jack Somack) provide the comic relief in this intense tale about the young Portnoy who cannot find happiness in his life and relates every detail to his psychiatrist. Alexander picks up a sex-crazed woman (Karen Black) and they quickly become a couple. The problem is, Portnoy works for the city and Monkey as she is called (because she invented a new sex position), cannot even spell. The dichotomy between the characters is overshadowed by their mutual love of sex.

Marfa (Lillian Gish), a Russian peasant girl, is in love with Jan (Frank Bennett). However, her uncle and aunt (A.D. Sears and Pearl Elmore) want her to marry an older, wealthy man. Colonel Griegoff (Walter Long) wants her, but Marfa will have nothing to do with him. When he tries to have his way with her, she knocks him out with a club and runs off. Along with her uncle and aunt, she emigrates to America. Jan, who wants to make his fortune, is on the same ship. They all settle in the Russian district of Los Angeles. Once again, Marfa's pushy relatives try to force her into an arranged marriage, but they are foiled by Jan and the police. A quick glance at this plot shows why Lillian Gish preferred to downplay many of the films she made with directors other than D.W. Griffith.

"L'affittacamere" is another one of those awful Italian comedies that are nothing more than a mix of cheap eroticism, where the cute girl gets naked over and over, and gross humor. The problem here is that gross humor is the main subject here and in this kind of film that's unforgivable.

Owning The Origins of Film three disc box set from Image is like having your own private museum of film history. Boasting hours of quality programming from the silent era as compiled and preserved by the Library of Congress Video Collection, this set celebrates some of the art form’s earliest and most significant movies, from the earliest films by both African American and female directors to a treasure trove of animation’s earliest days. Author Kevin Brownlow has called the silent era the richest period of cinema history, and one need look no further than The Origins of Film to confirm the validity of that statement. Before there was Spike Lee, there was Oscar Micheaux. Before there were Jane Campion or even Ida Lupino, there were Alice Guy-Blache and Lois Weber. And before there were Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse, there were Krazy Kat and the Katzenjammer Kids.

A wry, painfully funny portrait of a really horny girl in rural Norway, Turn Me On is an honest and charming exploration of the open-endedness of teenage sexuality, with the mellow coolness of a Gus Van Sant film, a great soundtrack and one of the most awkward moments involving a boner ever put on film. Anna, a pretty but unassuming high-schooler, has eyes for the class hunk and calls a phone sex line on her spare time, making friends with the operator. Along with her buddies, she knows the boredom of her middle-of-nowhere town all too well, lolling about in mall parking lots and at bus stops, which just compounds her horniness……

Lukas Moodysson presents (1998-2004) [Re-UP]

Lukas Moodysson is a Swedish director famed for his brutal, documentary-style approach to filmmaking - capturing some controversial aspects of life with desperate realism. Some of his films are easily comparable to the works of Ken Loach or Larry Clarke and similarly his movies may not be to everyone’s taste and will possibly appeal to few - but they are still commonly regarded as poignant statements about the horrors of real - often teenage - life. Here we get a collection of four of his main features, capturing, in turn, the troubles associated with ‘coming out’, the ups and downs of life in a seventies free-living commune, an abandoned child’s struggle in Russia and finally a boy’s struggle for survival while his dad films a degrading porn movie in the living room. None of them sound very appealing, but often - as in the case with depressing movies like Bjork’s debut, Dancer in the Dark - the pain of watching is worth it in the end.
