The world of music has some resemblance with the natural world. Just as happens in nature with living beings, but at a much quicker pace, musical instruments, genres and styles are created, offered to the public, and then may succeed or not in conquering a place in the musical world. Success and popularity, furthermore, can be fleeting or stable, and their object, in turn, may remain more or less the same for a long time, or evolve. It is not always clear why a particular instrument or genre gains recognition, and another does not; instruments with beautiful timbres fail to survive, and others which are not substantially better become extremely widespread.

Recording solo pieces was a departure from my usual ensemble or orchestral work, requiring a different mindset and approach (…) the solitude allowed for introspection and deep connection with the music, resulting in a profoundly personal recording experience. – Ásdís Valdimarsdóttir

Markus Kuikka writes: “Part of the good fortune that I have had in performing premieres of freshly composed works is in its inherent unpredictability. Such is the case with the present recorded works, which were published almost three hundred years ago. I performed the fantasies for the first time in 2017, incidentally the 250th anniversary of Telemann’s death. Telemann wrote for gamba with a steady hand, displaying intimate knowledge of the instrument. When playing these works, it seemed to me that the composer was at times telling jokes or dramatic stories via the viola da gamba. He also cultivated an endlessly wide variety of composition types and characters. However, although each of the twelve fantasies in the collection of which this recording includes nine are original and unique, all of Telemann’s fantasies for viola da gamba consists of three or four "sonata- style" movements. As a result, they appear to resemble Italian sonata in their movements, although due to its improvisational character, the collection is difficult to place in any specific type of composition: fantasy after all also involves a touch of fantasy”.

In the eighteenth century, the sonata model established by the published works of Arcangelo Corelli conquered all of musical Europe. Throughout the century, transcriptions of his music were published for every instrument, and the viola da gamba was no exception. The most interesting collection is that held at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris (MS Vm7 6308), which presents the twelve sonatas of Corelli’s op.5 in transcription for viola da gamba.

Although it is preserved in Paris, certain stylistic elements suggest that this transcription originated in the German-speaking region of Europe, with particular reference to composers such as Johannes Schenck, Konrad Höffler or Gottfried Finger, whose works were deeply influenced by Corelli’s style. It is to this repertory that Teodoro Bau, winner of the 2021 Ma Festival Bruges competition, devotes his recording.
