This 1973 release features what is essentially a Bay Area bar band led by Merl Saunders (keyboards) and Jerry Garcia (guitar) during the latter musician's downtime from the Grateful Dead. Along with the two subsequent "encore" volumes, Live at Keystone includes performances drawn from the quartet's July 10-11, 1973, run in the intimate confines of Keystone Korners in Berkeley. With the support of Bill Vitt(percussion) and John Kahn (bass), the pair jams their way through an eclectic assortment of covers and a few equally inspired original instrumentals.

In a 1991 interview, Garcia said, "So they used to have this Monday night jam session, but Howard gradually sort of took it over. Howard's this amazing organ player — difficult person, but wonderful musician. And for some reason he liked our playing, John [Kahn] and mine.

Welcome to the sound of Garcia Peoples at full speed. Without losing a ray of sunshine or a drop of dew, One Step Behind is the first major statement by the malleable Brooklyn sextet. The 32-minute title cut highlights the twin guitars and songwriting of Tom Malach and Danny Arakaki and, instead of pointing itself towards one possible future for the band, just zaps itself square into the thick of it. Encompassing a range of moods and scenes in one flowing arc (plus a coda), it’s less a piece of music to listen to than it is a zone to occupy, a portal for all open-eared heads.

3CD COLLECTION OF JERRY GARCIA S LIVE SOLO WORK As iconic a figure as any who emerged from the 1960s American counter-culture, Jerry Garcia is among the most beloved and respected musicians from the rock age. And while his work with the Grateful Dead requires little introduction, his other musical achievements, as a solo artist, a group member, one half of a duo, or - most notably - as leader and frontman of the Jerry Garcia Band, may be less familiar to the proverbial man-on-the-street, it remains just as potent, significant and downright entertaining. This tripe CD collection celebrates Garcia s solo work, bringing together as it does a trio of live recordings from the great man s golden era. Featuring, on disc one, a 1980 recording from JGB, recorded for live FM broadcast in Hempstead, New York in February 1980, on disc two another broadcast recording is included, this time of a show he gave with bass player John Khan in Santa Cruz in 1985. Concluding this superb collection, on disc three a concert by Jerry Garcia and bluegrass mandolinist David Grisman is featured, recorded in Garcia s spiritual home, San Francisco, in early 1991.

Allmusic:
The Grateful Dead's fourth title was likewise their first extended concert recording. Spread over two LPs, Live/Dead (1969) finally was able to relay the intrinsic sonic magnificence of a Dead show in real time. Additionally, it unleashed several key entries into their repertoire, including the sidelong epic and Deadhead anthem"Dark Star" as well as wailing and otherwise electrified acidic covers of the Rev. Gary Davis blues standard "Death Don't Have No Mercy" and the R&B rave-up "(Turn on Your) Lovelight." Finally, the conundrum of how to bring a lengthy performance experience to the listener has been solved.
