During 1974-1977, the fiery tenor saxophonist/multi-instrumentalist Carlos Garnett recorded five albums for the Muse label, which ranged from adventurous to a bit commercial; the best was the first set, Black Love. This single CD from 1997 has six selections that are drawn from each of the albums (Journey to Enlightenment is represented by two cuts) and are essentially the best of Carlos Garnett.
This is Carlos Garnett's third CD this decade after nearly 20 years away from the music business, and it's easily his most consistent and satisfying date. Raw, rough, and tart-sweet à la Jackie McLean, and searching like John Coltrane, Panamanian tenor saxophonist Garnett has his own sound that fills the air with saturated, spiritually oriented notes but never goes overboard with histrionics. What is most impressive is the togetherness of the band; trumpeter Russell Gunn (on seven of the nine tracks) meshes well with Garnett harmonically, while pianist Carlton Holmes has the McCoy Tyner spectrum covered.
Carlos Garnett really finds his own sound here – and steps into a wonderful blend of funky riffs, spiritual styles, and more – all in one of the most ambitious albums he cut during the 70s! There's a really expansive blend of acoustic and electric instrumentation going on here – played by a large ensemble, but one that's got a nicely focused feel – a groove that really pushes the sound of Garnett's other records with its wide instrumentation, yet which still has all the punch and power of before!
This CD reissues an interesting if not essential set by the passionate saxophonist Carlos Garnett. The five selections (which are augmented by two previously unissued alternate takes) combine together advanced jazz, electronics (particularly from guitarist Reggie Lucas who was with Miles Davis at the time), the voices of Dee Dee Bridgewater (on one of her first dates) and Ayodele Jenkins which are often heard in the ensembles, and funky pop elements. In addition to Garnett (mostly heard on tenor and soprano), trumpeter Charles Sullivan, pianist Allan Gumbs and guitarist Lucas are the main soloists while Bridgewater is well featured on the two versions of "Banks Of The Nile." The unpredictable music overall is eccentric, sometimes overcrowded, and very much of the period but it holds one's interest.
Born and raised in Toronto, Garnett Ford formed his first band, Pinball, during the mid '70s. They played the local area circuit, venturing occasionally out west and into the US, when Frederick Starchuck took an interest. He signed Ford to a management deal, and within a year a contract with Warner Brothers. They wanted him as a solo act, so Pinball folded and Ford went into Phase One Studios with Ian Thomas and Gary Muth. UNDER THE INFLUENCE was released in February, 1978. A slick blend of pop and adult rock, it was all originals, mostly written by Ford with Doug Templeton, sent in for the job by Starchuck.
Saxophonist Carlos Garnett’s second album was recorded from the Muse label in 1974. ‘Journey To Enlightenment’ is a strong 10 min long spiritual jazz track, that begins with chant like vocals and then progresses into an instrumental piece featuring a blistering sax solo from Carlos, and lovely melodic keyboard solo from Hubert Eaves, before returning to the vocal chants again towards the end. ‘Love Flower’ a very funky spiritual jazz song featuring Ayodele Jenkins mesmerising powerful vocals. ‘Chana’ is the album’s best known track, a highly rhythmic bustling instrumental jazz dancer, which has been a popular floor filler on the UK jazz scene for many years.
