Istanbul has a deep, layered history. From its beginnings as a fishing village to one of the pillars of the Roman world. The final stop on the Silk Road. The centre of the Ottoman Empire as the Turks spread their huge net across the Middle East. Across the centuries the city drew in cultures and blended them. Growing up there, singer-songwriter Gaye Su Akyol breathed all that in every day, along with her family’s ancient roots in Anatolia. Those rich traditions combine to form part of the sound she’s developed on her album Hologram Ĭmparatorluğu (Hologram Empire), where sultry Turkish melodies twine around spiky, twanging guitars and insistent rhythms.

With the release of her first album Develerle Yaşıyorum (2014) and her first international album “Hologram İmparatorluğu” (2016), Gaye Su Akyol established herself as one of Turkey’s most compelling young voices and most exhilarating sonic explorers. Her work as a singer-songwriter, producer and audio/visual conceptualist, simultaneously navigates the storied past, the hyper-connected present and the unscripted future.

Tels des Tintin à guitares, les musiciens de Dirtmusic changent de destination à chaque album. Après leur plongée au Mali en compagnie des Touaregs de Tamikrest ou avec les musiciens d’ethnie Bwa, Ben Zabo, nous retrouvons l’Américain Chris Eckman (The Walkabouts) et l’Australien Hugo Race (ancien Bad Seeds), plongés dans une aventure en Anatolie. Quatre musiciens turcs leur font face : Murat Ertel de Baba Zula (voix, saz, baglama) qui co-signe la plupart des titres, le percussionniste Ümit Adakale qui maintient, du début à la fin, beats efficaces et polyrythmies enivrantes, la chanteuse Gaye Su Akyol qui prête sa jolie voix sur Love is a Foreign Country et Görkem Şen, inventeur du yaybahar, qui, sur Outrage et Bu Bir Ruya, déploie son instrument hybride entre violoncelle et percussion ressemblant à un Calder.
